This Year's Model Updates:

Honda redesigns its cars and trucks every four to five years, whether they need it or not. For 2001, it's the Honda Civic's turn. Larger inside and out, with more powerful engines but a less sophisticated suspension, coupes and sedans return in familiar DX, LX and EX trims, while HX models come with two doors only. The GX Sedan is powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, the hatchback dies just when Americans are once again figuring out how useful they can be, and the sporty Si goes on hiatus for a year or two.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, reputation for durability, neato CVT transmission, likely to retain a healthy chunk of original value, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Si goes bye-bye, gotta get the EX or GX for ABS, vanilla-flavored sedan styling.

  • My Civic, "TIMMY" - 2001 Honda Civic

I love my civic, but it does have a few "flaws", such as the horrible shaking of the steering wheel when it gets to about 60 mph, i thought it was the tires or something, so i got them balanced and rotated and my car aligned, but no better. SRS light came on, because the seat belt buckle is going out, and i wish it had a little more "omph", kind of sluggish from the get-go, but once that VTEC kicks in,its on!

We have nothing but great things to say about this car. It is reliable, sporty, quick and efficient.

  • Great Until Transmission Went Out - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought this car new. Automatic. No problems at all until transmission went out at 86,000 miles. Will cost me $2600 to replace with a used transmission with 46,000 miles on it. Ouch! What a surprise! My car before this, a 1991 Honda Accord, had 230,000 on it when I got rid of it and no transmission trouble. My next car will be another Honda Accord.

I was planning to buy a Jetta, but always liked the fact that my friends who drove Civics thought the world of them. There just happened to be a Honda dealer next to the VW one I was at, so I figured, "why not check it out"? I am so happy I bought the Civic - its fun to drive, gets great mileage, and is surprisingly roomy inside for a smaller sedan. My only complaint about its performance is the transmission sometimes "catches" as Im accelerating (I drive an automatic).

First Honda I had purchased and I love it! Have owned Chevy and Ford small cars and this Civic outclasses them all - by a wide gap. I really like that the car is still worth something after having it for a while. I would definately buy another and recommend one to others. My wife likes to drive it too. I am 63" and fit into it okay. I commute a lot and the fuel economy is excellent!I bought it to commute and that it does that very, very well.

Looked around at new 2006 Civics and stumbled across a nice loaded 2001 EX coupe with low mileage (34k), Honda certified, for less than half of the price of a new 2006 coupe (<$10k). Very spacious, smooth, nice features, ergonomic interior. Youll have to pry this car out of my hands in 10 years - unless you can find me something else that gets good mpg, is comfortable and fun to own, is extremely safe, and holds its value as well as the 7th gen Civic. Im waiting, meanwhile Ill be cruising in my Honda getting 38 worry-free miles per gallon.

Good car to drive and good mileage. Very poor quality. Power window doesnt work, front strut failed at 46,000. Front bearing went out at 47000. Rear defroster doesnt work. Front air dam keeps falling off.

This car is great for the buy. If youre looking for something that can holds its own ground, do yourself a favor and buy this car. Of course its no BMW M3 but this car has its qualities of its own. The manual transmission rocks, and the engine is OK. I added a cold air intake on mine and it flies. Handling is good and gets a bunch better after I got some 17" TSW wheels and racing tires. Tons of fun and looks pretty sweet.

  • Not as good as I thought it would be - 2001 Honda Civic

A previous Toyota owner. Bought brand new. Driven for almost 5 years. Consideing its a small car, accelation and braking is fine and spacious inside. Easy and simple to use inside layout. Check engine light came on and off and stayed on. Turned out a major tranny(torque converter) problem covered under warranty, which would have cost close to 2K at dealer. Squeaky noises from suspensions on and off. Driving is very bouncy(No. I dont mean smooth here. still felt every bump, though. whats up with this?) but straight. Rattles from behind somewhere on and off. MPG is not as good as advertised. Overall decent but not excellent. Honda reliablity and sporty driving. None there with this Civic.
