This Year's Model Updates:

Honda redesigns its cars and trucks every four to five years, whether they need it or not. For 2001, it's the Honda Civic's turn. Larger inside and out, with more powerful engines but a less sophisticated suspension, coupes and sedans return in familiar DX, LX and EX trims, while HX models come with two doors only. The GX Sedan is powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, the hatchback dies just when Americans are once again figuring out how useful they can be, and the sporty Si goes on hiatus for a year or two.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, reputation for durability, neato CVT transmission, likely to retain a healthy chunk of original value, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Si goes bye-bye, gotta get the EX or GX for ABS, vanilla-flavored sedan styling.

  • Tranny Problems? - 2001 Honda Civic

Had noise in front Right tire, dealer took apart and rebuilt, now its fine. Heat is TERRIBLE! never seems to get hot, brought it to dealer twice, said there is no problem??? Front struts were leaking and motor mount bracket was cracked...dealer fixed. Also car would slip out of 2nd gear frequently, dealer rebuilt tranny and fixed problem. Car would grind while shifting down to 2nd gear, dealer replaced synchros and all is fine now except my heat problem...Other than above I love the car, very fun to drive!

This will be the fifth Honda I have owned, and the second auto. transmission. This model has yet to disappoint, although I dont expect it to. Reliability, fuel mileage are the main reasons I have kept Hondas in the garage, and also the ability to make upgrades performance wise, i.e. loud exhaust, rims, tires, etc.

  • My 5 Spd 2001 DX Civic: Mixed Reviews - 2001 Honda Civic
    By -

Ive owned my 01 DX Civic for over 4 yrs & 72k miles. Almost immediately the alt pulley came off & was fixed under warranty. At about 18k mi the brakes started grinding, i was told I needed new brakes ok. Still they were grinding. After 8 visits and 8 resurfacings they found that a badly adjusted control made the brake pedal hang down about 1/2 in, just like i described... I had a hill holder. At 30k mi they gave me a new set of pads and rotors and that was the last problem Ive had. Since then, no problem.

  • Im loving it! - 2001 Honda Civic

I got this Civic as a second car and because of my commute became my primary car. So far, no issues and really good gas mileage (from 37 to 46MPG in AZ) with Octane 87. I believe I have the better one so far according to (www.fueleconomy.gov). So why buy a hybrid? I recently changed the spark plugs which made a huge difference as the car is more responsive than ever. Im loving it!

  • Great car - 2001 Honda Civic

I purchased this car new, and have had a great experience with it. It has been driven cross country several times. I have gotten 140,000 miles so far and have done nothing except routine maintenence.

  • Disappointment - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought our Civic with high expectations. I love the engine and gearbox. The suspension is comfortable, although not a sporty as I would like. The car is roomy and enjoyable to drive. HOWEVER, the build quality is terrible - From the moment we got the car is needed a new radio, and a clunk in the front suspension still exists after 3 attempts to repair. The front seat has had three attempts at repairing it - the bushings fair after 6 months. Hmmm... what else - oh yes, the window regulator has been replaced, the engine computer reprogrammed to stop the car stalling... Not what I expected from a Honda - I am very disappointed

  • just what I needed - 2001 Honda Civic

I love Hondas. Ive owned many cars over the years and nothing Ive had compares. I got this after my 87 Accord LXi finally died. This one is the right mix of sportiness and practicality for me. Ive never been a 4-door guy before, but with two small kids now, it makes sense. Installing their car seats and getting them in and out is a breeze. A five star crash rating, ABS, and good handling are all pactical plusses. The roominess for its class is outstanding. Im 63" and am quite cofortable behind the wheel. The VTEC gives me almost as much power as Id like and the acceleration is enough for me to pass with confidence.

Smooth & comfortable. Easy shifting, great brakes & 30-42 MPG.

  • 2dr EX - 2001 Honda Civic

Excellent car for the price. Quite roomy for the class, 127 hp is more than enough for daily driving. It gets out of its own way without a problem. Braking is excellent. The VTech engine just purrs. It alone is worth the difference in price over the LX/DX models. Seats are comfortable, although at 510" I just have enough headroom with the seat lowered all the way. The shifter is sublime
