This Year's Model Updates:

Floor mats become standard on all Taurus models, and the base V6 benefits from improved fuel economy. All but the base LX get security approach lamps, while LX and SE come standard with six-passenger seating. A slew of no-charge options are available on various Taurus models for 2002: SE gets a free power driver seat and CD player; SES comes with free leather or a moonroof (regionally available); SEL adds leather or moonroof, or both (regionally available). SEL also has standard adjustable pedals for 2002. A new SEL Wagon debuts. A new SEL premium package includes a Mach audio system, side airbags and traction control. Optional on SES and SEL is a new Luxury and Convenience group, which provides an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and heated side mirrors. Four new colors round out the list of changes.

Pros:
  • Excellent value for the money, high level of safety equipment and crash protection, available as a sedan or a wagon, usually discounted with rebates and incentives.
Cons:
  • Rental car stigma, poor expected resale value, no rear disc brakes on the sedan.

  • Not too bad - 2002 Ford Taurus

The 2002 Ford Taurus SES is a good family car and does well in the snow. The fuel consumption is nothing get excited over, tends to burn gas quickly. Interior looks good and well manufactured. No major problems thus far but only an owner for 7 months. Would rate the Taurus "Most bang for the buck" you may notice it would it comes to its depreciation value.

I have enjoyed owning this car very much. I have just over 28,000 trouble free miles on the car. One small complaint is the rubber at the bottom of the windows stays wet forever. Other than that, I have really enjoyed all the gadgets that came with the car. I do miss heated seats, so I purchased sheepskins for the two front seats. I have found the seats with the sheepskins to be very comfortable on long trips. I also had simulated wood installed on the shifter console and the radio/heater control. Gives the car a richer look, which I felt was missing.

  • Too much road and air noise - 2002 Ford Taurus

I purchashed this vehicle used w/ 15000. While driving on the expressways I get a loud roaring noise coming from the air intake or the fan. This primarily occur between 60- 65mph.The noise goes away after exceeding those speeds. This noise doesnt interfere with the proformance of the vehicle, but it is very annoying.I like the vehicle but dont know what to do about this problem.

  • Goood car - terrible trade-in value - 2002 Ford Taurus
    By -

My wife and Iboth love the car. Its fun to drive, has plenty of power, is manuevarable and reasonably comfortable. Sound system is very good and A/C & Heat are adequate. the gas mileage is not the best although not really bad, averaging about 17 mpg around town. The trade-in value on this vehicle, I have since discovered, is very, very bad. The surprising thing is that it is really a very good car to own, just big and strong enough for most people. I really think that the problem is that its a FORD. Quality may be Number One but depreciation is really a major factor.

  • Good car for the $ - 2002 Ford Taurus

Our car was a former rental car and we got it for 10k with 17k miles on it. Pretty good deal. It leaves a few things to be desired. Not great for tall people! I always hit my head. Another problem is that all the doors lock when you put it in drive but only the front unlocks when you park! Very irritating! Interior is a bit cheap looking, but not bad. There is a definate issue with the braking, it is not great and I beleave our rotators are already bad! But for 10k it is really a great car! And hopefully it will last as long as my parents 93 model (it ran perfect into the 150k range!)

  • best value in its class for a used car - 2002 Ford Taurus

couldnt agree more with raybans review of 8/10. You hit it right on the head!! Very nice care anyway, but as a used car an outstanding value!! This car is an "in-betweener". Its not the standard car everybody wants (Honda Accord/Toyota Camry) but its also not a stinker either. Most people dont give the Taurus its due because of the rental car stigma. A very good value for the money. You can steal one of these as a used car where you wont be able to do so with a used Japanese model. Ive been impressed and I previously drove Hondas for 13 years. Worth a look. . .

The taurus was the last thing I thought Id buy. After taking it around the block, and then for a "fly by" on the freeway I was sold and so was the car. I got the premium package which inclued every option. The Mach stereo is certainly worth every penny! My friends keeps asking what kind of amp and speakers I have, they are shocked when I tell them its stock. I have only had the car for almost a year, but I have already installed a performance chip, cold air intake, and added custom dual exhaust, so the 200 hp is now up somwhere around 225 hp. This is one hot "family" car. Come to www.tauruscarclub.com to check out some other opinions as well.

  • 2002 Ford Taurus SE Sedan Honest Owner Review - 2002 Ford Taurus
    By -

I purchased my 2002 Ford Taurus in April 2016. It is my first car, and it had just about 86,000 miles on it and cost $2,900, a fair price at the time. Throughout the time Ive owned this car, the experience I have gained from owning this car has been completely average. By this, I mean that nothing about this car really stands out while compared to other cars of its class. Its a vehicle that was built for the purpose of getting you and any other passengers from point A to point B. It isnt as comfortable as a luxury sedan, but it also doesnt feel like a pickup truck going down a dirt road. Its average. It doesnt have the power of a new Audi S8, but its also not as slow as a Yugo. Its average. Its not as mechanically sound as a Toyota 4Runner, but it wont leave you in the dust like a 500,000 mile Cavalier would. Once again, its average. Getting into the drivers seat, I immediately notice something very convenient; door handles in just the right spot where you dont have to pull at a weird angle just to close the door. Ive noticed in newer Fords (such as a 2013 Fusion, 2012 Fiesta, 2012 Focus, 2012 Edge) that the interior door handle (driver side) is placed closer to the steering wheel, meaning youre pulling the door shut in an uncomfortable position which gets on my nerves every time I get in. Also, the center console feels very roomy and makes for a comfortable arm rest when it is not folded back into an extra seat. Sometimes the little things really count! An adjustable steering wheel and electric seats and pedals with easy to use controls makes finding the right position very easy, however the seats arent ones that I could still feel comfortable in after a long drive. Although the entire vehicle isnt enormous, it has a very spacious interior able to fit 6 total people! Im 511 and have plenty of headroom and my knees arent constantly hitting the bottom of the steering wheel. The trunk has plenty of space as well, and should fit all of your basic needs without a problem! My experience driving my Taurus varies every time I get in. On some days, it accelerates very well and gets me up to speed without a problem. On other days it feels slow and sluggish, as if Im driving with 3 other 200 pound men in the car with the AC on when Im only driving by myself on the same roads I go down every day. One thing that is consistent however is that it struggles to go up any slight hill. Another trait about my Taurus that is inconsistent is the shifting. Sometimes it will shift into the next gear (accelerating from about 25-35mph) at around 2800 RPMs and go down to about 2100, but other times it will go all the way up to around 3600-4000 RPMs before it shifts, despite the fact that I dont drive any differently on those 2 occasions. In terms of its reliability, I feels as though its days are numbered. Every day it gets me where I need to go and has not given me any huge trouble. The only real problem that I have had with it in the past 10,000 miles was 2 bad starters and a dead battery. Other than that, the only things that needed to be done was a new AC blower motor, windshield wipers, alignment, and oil changes. The current problems that I have as of March 2017 are a bad passenger side reverse light, a belt that squeaks when wet, and possibly a dirty throttle body (sometimes the gas pedal gets stuck while in resting position). The gas mileage isnt horrible, but it doesnt feel great either. I get about 250 miles out of a full tank, considering Ive been driving at or slightly over the speed limit every day for about 2 weeks. If I have to do any highway driving or 30-ish minute long drives multiple times a week, a full tank might only last a week or less. All in all, my Taurus has served its purpose as my first car; getting me where I need to go without having to spend a ton of money on it. All in all, I would recommend the Taurus to somebody who needs to transport multiple people on a regular basis but is on a tighter budget. For someone such as myself who doesnt transport more than 1 or 2 people regularly and doesnt need to travel more than 5-15 miles round-trip every day, the Taurus isnt the vehicle that really suits my lifestyle. In April 2016 when I bought my Taurus, its value at 86,000 miles purchasing from a dealer was $2,900 between Edmunds and KBB. As of March 2017, the value of the same car with 86,000 miles from a dealer is about $2,200, and Im afraid that the value will keep on going down throughout the next few years. For me, this wouldnt bother me as much if I didnt consider selling it in the near future. All in all, it has served me relatively well in the past year, however, at 95,000 miles I dont feel as though it will keep being reliable and hold up very well for the next few years, nor will it hold its value for very long.

  • Too many quality issues - 2002 Ford Taurus

The interior and exterior design of the car is beautiful. Good performance from the 24 valve engine. This is my first and last Ford to buy though. In ten months my car has been in the shop seven times. I have had the shift gate, passenger side door seal and brakes replaced in the first three months. Now the car has been in the shop for ten days to replace another shift gate, the steering wheel and is in for the third time for vibration and noise in the drivetrain and they cannot figure out what it is. Not what I expected from a new car. I think I bought a lemon and Ford is dragging their feet. Will never buy one again.
