This Year's Model Updates:

After the 2000 redesign, updates are minor. A Lower Anchor and Tether for Children (LATCH) is now standard on all models. LATCH is an anchoring system for child safety seats. Also new is Spruce Green Clearcoat Metallic, an increase in fuel tank capacity to 18 gallons, a six-disc CD changer standard on SES models, power locks standard on LX and an optional rear spoiler.

Pros:
  • Excellent value for the money, high level of safety, available as a sedan or a wagon.
Cons:
  • Rental car stigma, front seats lack comfort, no rear disc brakes on the sedan.

  • Dependable, but gas guzzler - 2001 Ford Taurus

This is a very nice family car, very safe too drive, but poor in town gas mileage is the downside to this car.

  • Reliable cost effective transportation - 2001 Ford Taurus

Nice mid size transportation that can be bought inexpensively after a year or two. Car has been very reliable with the only exception being the suspension springs. They recalled the front springs but not the back. In my opinion the front and back were defective. Other than that a nice car to drive and ride.

  • Great when its running - 2001 Ford Taurus

I have to say that this is an awesome vehicle when its running. After 400 miles the engine needed to be replaced. After that, the starter, fuel pump, several sensors too many other repairs to remember. Has been in the shop about 16 times or more and I have only had it for 18 months. The ride and comfort is better then most luxury models. This would be such a fantastic car if the reliability were better.

  • A Solid 9 - 2001 Ford Taurus

Reliability- in 110K, needed only gas, reg maint, a hose, 2 transaxle seals, and the low coolant light comes on 4 no reason. Build quality is a 9 b/c panels come loose, and cruise button quit. Ext design is perfect. Interior design is str8up. Is A lot of fun 2 drive. Gas mileage is poor, 20 city, 23 highway, and I do 95% highway. EPA is 20/27. Comfort-9 (see below). Performance- 9. For cruddy gas mileage, would love another 100HP, 200 and 24V isnt enough. But I love it, perect family car. Dont care for the Fusion, may go for 2008 Taurus, because I loved the 500, but never got one.

Power and handling are about what Id expect from this V6. My wife started driving it as a company car with about 6K. We bought it from her company at 36K. Goodyear did all maintanance to there. I have done all maintanence since, Mobil 1 oil. Trans service regularly. The EGR went out at 36K and again at 100K. Three sensors are out now with 107K showing. I had to take it to a shop to replace the serp. belt as there is not enough clearance to put my wrenches on it. Then the belt adjuster blew up at about 60K. Back to the shop. To replace plugs is major surgery. Brakes and suspension have lasted as expected. Locks quit at about 100K. My daughter drives it now so all bets are off.

  • Nothing Special - 2001 Ford Taurus

Basically, no difference in the 2001 Taurus & 1999 Taurus. Same ride, almost the same look but for a respectable price.

I purchased my 2001 Taurus used in 2004 and for a year now I have had no major problems with my car. Very quiet ride and safe. I do a lot of traveling and I give it three thumbs up.

  • ITS RIGHT - 2001 Ford Taurus

Car is ok to drive, dependable, reliable, good gas mileage, pretty decent ride for long trips. Regular maintenance and you will be fine (oil changes, transmission service every 50,000 miles or so). Brake rotors major problem, they warp very easily. Even with them NEW, stopping distance is mediocre, need 4-discs instead of drums in the back. Seats are slightly uncomfortable I feel the need to adjust the seat constantly. Needs more HP and response to throttle. Also, if you intend to drive this car aggressively beware engine oil pressure jumps up very quickly. Only thing I have replaced is the serpentine belt 117k miles.

  • Not made for high milage drivers - 2001 Ford Taurus
    By -

I bought my Taurus in May of 2001. It would be a great car for someone who dose not drive 40 thousand plus miles a year. Brakes rooters warp too quickly. Had to do major suspension repair at 57000 miles. Windshield started leeking at 82000 miles and caused $747.00 of damage to the electrical system. I travel interstate 90% of the time and feel these are problems that I have never had in a Camry or Galant.

  • What Else Could You Want? - 2001 Ford Taurus
    By -

I have had my Taurus now for almost 5 years. I bought it new with 3 miles on it. since the day I drove it off the lot I have not had one problem with it, other than the normal brakes and oil changes and tires (also I suggest changing the tires to a better quality...it improves the ride considerably). I do however have a strange rattle noise coming from what I presume to be my windshield (right where the dash meets the windshield) and no one can seem to find out how to fix it or where it is coming from! I love this car and my brother just bought a Ford 500 and I would by another Taurus (which I am due to the 251,000 miles on mine). I would definitely suggest this car to anyone.
