This Year's Model Updates:

This year's changes to the 1999 Ford Ranger include standard 15-inch silver styled wheels, a class III frame-mounted hitch receiver for V6 applications, and a spare tire access lock. All models get dual front cupholders and Dark Graphite has been added to the interior colors options list while Willow Green and Denim Blue have been removed as interior choices. The "Splash" model has been discontinued. A 3.0-liter V6 flexible fuel engine is available that is designed specifically for ethanol/gasoline fuel blends.

Pros:
  • The 1999 Ford Ranger continues to be a cutting edge truck with four-door entry, a five-speed automatic and optional flexible fuel/electric powertrains.
Cons:
  • The 1998 restyled body makes a failed attempt to outshine the current Dakota.

My 1999 Ranger has been a reliable work horse. It has never let me down, unlike the 3 different Ford dealers that have worked on it. It took them 3 years to fix a problem with the CPU that was causing power loss and terrible pinging in the motor while accelerating. Other than that aggravating problem I would recommend this truck to anyone who has a job to do and needs a truck that can do it.

fairly dependable. a few electrical gremlins(ive had electrical problems with all 3 rangers ive owned.) that would drain my battery overnight. also, it has the normal, ford power steering pump whine. gas mileage with the 3 liter engine and 4 speed automatic transmission is about 13 mpg around town and 18-19 on the highway.

Looked extensively at small trucks and SUVs prior to this buy. Was impressed by reports of reliability and the sheer numbers of these trucks sold. Narrowed my search to Toyota 4WD or this. Was shocked at how much more I liked this after driving both. Toyota popularity and reputation being what they are. No regrets. Have the 3.0 6V engine and have both great gas mileage and power- on-demand.

Good and some bad. Got the 4.0 V6 in a manual. Good engine, make the most of it with manual, and pull 20 mpg on highway which is only 2 mpg less than my old 2wd 4 cyl. Going on 60K, good engine no probs with drivetrain. Lots of little things have been a pain. Park brake got stuck in middle of summer, had to have it towed. Door ajar light always on, Now ABS light on. Off road package outstand, limmited slip is much better off-road, rarely have to use 4wd. good in snow, put weight in back though.

  • Good little truck - 1999 Ford Ranger

I like the truck and plan to drive it until it wont go anymore. One thing to watch for is the flair side bed opening at the tail gate is < 4 ft so it will not fit drywall or plywood. That is why I got the styleside, not as pretty, but more functional. 4.0 V6 gives a good amount of power for the mountains. When it is time to buy again, if Ford as the 4-door cab, I will look strongly at the Ranger again.

I am only a few months away from paying off the 0.9% financing and have loved owning this truck. Feels strong and sturdy but much better milage than my fathers F150 and brothers 250. Got all the amenities (power everything) with lower price.

  • Not too shabby - 1999 Ford Ranger

Ive put 15,000 miles on it in the past 6 months. This is my first newer vehicle ( I was driving a 79 suburban) While the ranger lacks the bang of a 454 big block, it more than makes up for it in all around performance. The only problem Ive had is a faulty sensor that set off the check engine and ABS lights but, it only cost a few bucks to fix. I reccomend premium fuel (tends to rattle a bit if you dont)Wish I would have had the $ for a 4wd and extended cab model, but thus far I am happy with the purchase

  • Ranger as a work truck - 1999 Ford Ranger

I bought the Ranger because of the good reviews I had gotten from Co-workers. I am a courier, had previously owned Chevy S-10s that had broken down a lot, and saw a lot of my Co-workers having good luck with their Fords. My three year old Ranger now has 230,000 miles on it and has held up very well. I bought the 6 cylinder engine because I do some hauling and have been very happy with the perfomance. It doesnt get great gas mileage, but it runs well. I will probably buy another Ranger in the next year.
