This Year's Model Updates:

This year's changes to the 1999 Ford Ranger include standard 15-inch silver styled wheels, a class III frame-mounted hitch receiver for V6 applications, and a spare tire access lock. All models get dual front cupholders and Dark Graphite has been added to the interior colors options list while Willow Green and Denim Blue have been removed as interior choices. The "Splash" model has been discontinued. A 3.0-liter V6 flexible fuel engine is available that is designed specifically for ethanol/gasoline fuel blends.

Pros:
  • The 1999 Ford Ranger continues to be a cutting edge truck with four-door entry, a five-speed automatic and optional flexible fuel/electric powertrains.
Cons:
  • The 1998 restyled body makes a failed attempt to outshine the current Dakota.

  • great truck - 1999 Ford Ranger

I like the truck overall. Love how it rides higher than most other smaller trucks. Never had a problem with anything on the truck. Buying products off eBay has made maintenance very cheap. I have a 5 speed and it is very fun to drive. Only problem I have noticed is the plastic in the door feels cheap. It is becoming loose and the center seat/compartment is broken. The seat has a few tears in it but it is no problem and looks to be from a knife or other sharp object before I got it. Overall a great truck, but only 23 mpg and I drive mostly highway.

  • Still Seems New - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

Ive owned the 4x4 extended cab ranger since 2000, 2nd owner. This truck still seems new to me, even though it has 50,000 miles on it. The only problem is with the 4x4 electrical engagement. There is a problem that will cost me about $500 to fix. Dealer has to replace electrical box on transfer case. Choppy ride is only draw back. Otherwise fit and finish, interior and exterior are still great. Ford replaced the "Firestone roll over tires" for free. All in all Im still happy with this truck, and it is a shame to see such low ratings. Ive been through the new Ford pick-up plant in Dearborn - it is state of the art, and super-environmentally friendly!

  • Total Recall - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

The only reason I went to the Ranger, after having so many excellent Toyota FWDs, was cost. Ive put only 25,000 miles on my Ranger, and it has performed well. It does well in the snow and offroad, and is very comfortable on the highway. My biggest problem is with the gas mileage, but I knew that before I bought it. Shame on me! Also, I have grown tired of the various recalls. They do make you wonder about the quality of Ford products. (My Toyota pickups had nary a recall in 30 years.)

  • Useful truck - 1999 Ford Ranger

I have used this truck both in town, in the woods and on long highway trips. My only complaint is the under powered engine. Even with a 5 speed, it lacks power at highway speeds over 70 which is why I am buying a new one with the bigger 4.0 engine. I recommend it to anyone not needing the added hauling capacity of a full size truck. It never stranded me and has had very little problems. Aside from oil changes and tires, I probably have spent less than $200 in total on repairs.

  • 1999 Ford Ranger XLT supercab - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

I have had this truck since May of 2003 and have put about 25,ooo miles on it. It now has 47,780 miles on it and the only problem before now was with the battery cable. Now however my front suspension is creaking and squeaking (about to get checked) and my right rear speaker just out of the blue is busted. Overall it has been a good truck and will hopefully continue to be after these issues are fixed.

  • the truck for me - 1999 Ford Ranger

the 1999 ford ranger extended cab xlt is a great truck even though the 3 speed over drive is not very economic for i had the 4.0L six it was very fun to drive and i would highly recommend it for those people who want an american truck.

Not too bad of a truck...I have only had to replace a sensor for the emissions since I bought the truck with 40,000 miles in Aug. 2002. The truck is not that good with gas mileage. Seems like it should also have a little more "get up" when you step on the gas.

  • 99 Ranger Review - Transmission Problems - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

Great truck, but have major transmissions problems at 50000 miles. If this were a Chrysler I could understand it. I have had Fords all my life. Unless Ford extends their warranty on the powertrain, Ill be buying a Toyota next time.

  • My 4th Ranger - 1999 Ford Ranger
    By -

Had 4 Rangers all extended cab and 4 wheel drive. They just run and run. Only repairs are tires, brakes, and sometimes batteries. Ran all of them over 100,000 miles. The first was a 2.9 engine. All others had the 4.0. My only negative is I wish the gas mileage was a little better. (14.5 city and 19 highway)

Good engine(2.5L) for gas usage and reliable with 5-speed. Console handy. Like interior and exterior. Tires nothing special, but able to get 60k out of them. ABS a + but got serviced one time (warranty). Suspension, front shocks not holding up for more than 40k. Manual trans. could be better shifting a little stiffer and the clutchs ability to grab lags a bit. Front seats a pain to adj. back into pos. Driver seat springs worn and needs to be replaced after 70k miles, fabric held up well. New models better front susp. Truck a solid overall value. I had a few ext. warranty repairs, small stuff. I suggest the later models esp., 4L engine and 4-door a +
