This Year's Model Updates:

This year's changes to the 1999 Ford Ranger include standard 15-inch silver styled wheels, a class III frame-mounted hitch receiver for V6 applications, and a spare tire access lock. All models get dual front cupholders and Dark Graphite has been added to the interior colors options list while Willow Green and Denim Blue have been removed as interior choices. The "Splash" model has been discontinued. A 3.0-liter V6 flexible fuel engine is available that is designed specifically for ethanol/gasoline fuel blends.

Pros:
  • The 1999 Ford Ranger continues to be a cutting edge truck with four-door entry, a five-speed automatic and optional flexible fuel/electric powertrains.
Cons:
  • The 1998 restyled body makes a failed attempt to outshine the current Dakota.

Lots and lots of never ending electrical problems from year 1. Constantly needed tune ups about every other oil change.

The only good thing I can say is that the front seats were very comfortable. Reliability was the key issue. During the 6 years of ownership I spent about 50% of the purchase price in repairs. At the time I traded it the EGR needed to be replaced, the A/C was leaking, the differential had problems, and the left door light switch was bad.

I lived in a small town with big weather. Two weeks after I purchased the truck it snowed a lot. Ive had nothing but problems with the four wheel drive since and the 5 star dealership couldnt care less. This is not the first Ford Ive ever owned but Ive had about as much luck with all. Like a lot of people I know Im going to try a Dodge and if that doesnt work out Ill begin looking in the foreign markets. I hear Toyotas doing interesting things with their 4x4s.

Love the truck, except transmission problems at 50,000 miles and again at 70,000 miles. Ive had enough, Tacoma here I come.

Im really unhappy with this truck. Transmission went out at 37,000 miles when it was out of warrenty and cost me $2,500 to repair. I bought a new truck so I wouldnt have to incur expenses like this. Again at 89,000 miles I put yet another transmission in at $2,500. Ill never by another Ford and Im stuck with this one till I can save up to replace it, shoveling out huge amounts of money to keep it running makes that hard to do. Beware of Ford trucks.

For a small truck (4.0L) the mileage is too low. Full size GMC small V8 is near the same. Like all Ford pickups the front brakes are junk. Rotors rusted apart in less than 60,000km, $100 CAD each to replace. The front wheel bearings BOTH went at 107,000Km. $800.00 CAD to replace! Ive never known these bearings to fail in other trucks past 275,000km. GARBAGE! Just waiting for the $500 ball joints next. Dont buy this truck, get a Toyota instead.

First the engine I havent had any mechanical problems with the engine, it has 130,000 miles on it so far. I had to replace the bearings. The door ajar light used to stay on. The dome light has some issues. My speedometer cable currently isnt working. I get about 25 miles a gallon, with the 4 cylinder, which is pretty slow to me.

At 23,000 miles the drive shaft was already replaced twice. At 40,000 miles she has a cracked transfer case and at 80,000 a new transmission. a loud engine and a constant clunking when shifting gears makes its a poor buy. I suppose the only thing to love is the price. Fords response? Its normal! Look else where.......

In short... this is a pretty tough truck. It out tows any 4.3 Chevy I have owned. And does well in the snow. The rear seats are useless as well as the rear doors. It handles well but eats brakes and front tires. I would strongly suggest an extended warranty if you looking to buy one of these used.

I have always been a ford man, but this truck really stinks. Bought it slightly used at the dealership. Have had the transmission worked on a total of 3 times since i got it. Had the alternator replaced. The harness for the headlights burned out. The lights in the dash quit working. EGR valve replace way too early, Twice.
