  • Over 275,000 miles! - 1996 Ford Mustang

Over 275,000 miles on my 96 Mustang 6 cylinder and still going strong. Bought it used in 98 with 29,000 and have driven 135 miles daily round trip to work. The manual transmission went out at 185k and then the heater core started leaking at 225k. After they replaced the transmission, the speedometer cable burned into so for 3 months I didnt click off mileage so I have closer to 285k on this car and it is still going. This has been an overall excellent vehicle.

Bought new off the lot. Opal Frost GT with Option Package 248a (the 1996 version of the GTS). I added A/C at the dealer soon after purchase and then added a spoiler a couple of years later. There were a few minor problems early on (clutch noise, radio - all covered by the dealer). The intake manifold has blown twice (at 50k miles and 100k miles) - both times replaced by the dealer at no charge. Pirelli P7000 tires are a great fit for this car (get ~40k miles on them and all-weather traction). Good mileage for a V8. Some wear on the interior pieces but overall the car has aged very well. Paint still looks new. Has been a great car still going strong on original engine at 157K miles.

I bought the car a few months ago and i absolutely love it. It is fun to drive and fairly fast. It does get the worst gas mileage, but thats the price you pay for 8 cylinders. Some must-have mods are: Flowmaster Dela 40 exhaust with chrome tips, headers, and a 70mm throttle body. I recommend the Edelbrock. I kept the factory intake but put on a Kk&N filter. I also opened up the scoops in the hood so the engine is kept colder. I get 20 more HP in the winter time.

have owned the car for a year and had to replace radiator and power steering pump. Great car to drive but have a deep wallet to put into parts.

  • Still fun after all these years - 1996 Ford Mustang

Bought new, gets comments eight years later. Red paint glistens. Blew the intake manifold at 55 k, Ford covered repair even though out of warranty! Differential leak at about 90,000. Ended up paying for a new rear end. My fault...fixing the leak would have been much less costly. Clutch went at 110,000, but got the repair for $600 by avoiding the dealer. Ran too hot for a summer. Replaced radiator at 120k which fixed the problem ($400). Now runs cool even in 100 degree heat with the a/c blasting. Tires good for no more than 45 k. Im now running my third set. At about $900 per, thats not cheap. But man, those meats look good.

The heater core has gone out 3 times since 2000, and its been in 2 accidents. Even though it is not the best car by far, i still love my gt.

  • The Money Pit - 1996 Ford Mustang

I was so excited to purchase this vehicle back in 1996. It was so much fun to drive and very comfortable. When the car hit 47,000 miles things went sour. The head gaskets blew and the car was out of commission for 2+ months while waiting for a new engine to replace the damaged lower block. A few months after that, the car was recalled for this problem. Right after that the a/c line broke. I had all the repairs made at the dealer. Then most recently, the engine blew again! I could not believe it. This will make the 3rd engine and it only has 108,000 miles. Based on my experience, this car is THE money pit.

  • TIRES, TIRES, AND TIRES!!! - 1996 Ford Mustang

I think Ford made a really nice car with this coupe. For the money its a nice looking ride and some peep to it. One thing with these cars is they go through tires BIG TIME! and we drive it very little. Its not the tires I put on it, Its the car itself dragging the tires tread down. At 53K miles its I have replaced 4 sets of tires on it due to poor suspension. Nice looking car and good for a v-6 on gas
