This Year's Model Updates:

Heavily updated is the 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra, which makes 390 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque thanks to the addition of an Eaton supercharger. A new six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels through a 3.55 rear axle ratio. Larger wheels and tires come standard, along with stiffer springs and a tubular cross brace. Cobra convertibles have a cloth top, while both cars get new seats with upgraded leather and suede upholstery. A limited-production Mach 1 model arrives later in the year with a massaged 4.6-liter V8 engine making at least 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, a functional shaker hood with ram-air scoop, black striping, unique leather seating and retro-design Magnum 500 alloy wheels, and, of course, a Mach 460 audio system. Mach 1 can be ordered in a variety of colors with either a manual or automatic transmission. Like the Mustang Bullitt before it, the Mach 1 comes with a lowered, retuned suspension and additional frame rail connectors for a stiffer body. Large 13-inch Brembo front rotors and upgraded calipers are standard.

Standard V6 and V8 GT models change little for 2003. A V6 Pony Package includes 16-inch polished alloy wheels and the GT's scooped hood. All V6 models get a new hood design, and four new colors debut.

Pros:
  • Available V8 power, variety of trim levels, healthy dose of American attitude.
Cons:
  • Archaic structure, aged design.

If you dont require the power of the GT, this car should work for you. Total blast to drive - no regrets on giving up the practical sedan for this one.

This car has standard bad traits of "performance" cars that are normally forgivable - poor gas mileage, high insurance premiums, etc. Even the severely minimalist interior (ie., cheap and uninspired) was explained away as being for the "serious" performance enthusiast. Three years after purchase, Im still waiting for my car to perform. It has no power in first gear - which is fairly important in city driving as you often dont get a chance to shift up before youre cut off. Gunning it to get high rpms looks kind of stupid in heavy traffic. This vehicle has also developed some suspicious rattles during its limited 4700 miles, including weird A/C noises. Maybe its a lemon.

Bought it used in January and have driven it daily. Got it for a really low price. Gets okay gas mileage.

Its frightenlingly quick! Excellent acceleration with handling and braking to match. Congratulations to SVT for providing the "average Joe" with an affordable performance car that can go toe to toe with the likes of BMWs fabulous M3. Its great knowing I have NOTHING TO PROVE. There are but two American "production" automobiles that can out perform my Cobra. They are the Viper and Corvette Z06. Both outstanding cars that deserve every accolade accorded them. In the "Bang for the Buck" catagory, however, my Cobra beats them both, handily.

The bad. Ergonomics. Headrest isnt there. Shifter too far. Car is way too high in terms of springs. Interior design dates back to 94. Maybe this happens to just my car but you can hear an air leak on the drivers side in freeway speeds. Squeeky rear suspension. Dealer cant figure out what is causing it. The good. The power and handling is pretty good. Lots of fair price aftermarket modifications for it. The exterior design looks very muscular. Too bad for the 2005. Looks like the t- bird route.

Bought this car Aug 02 before any pictures were available of the hood that was different from earlier models. Was pleasantly surprised with the newer hood style (similar to 99 Cobra). Had a horrible howling noise from the rear end in less than 5000 miles which was replaced. I got the Dark Shadow Grey exterior which is the absolute prettiest color on a sunny day, and the absolute plainest color on a cloudy day. I put on a cat-back dual exhaust from Kenny Brown performance which adds a couple HP, deeper exhaust note and dresses up the rear with the nice polished SS tips. I also slapped on the Mach1 chin spoiler which gives it a nice front end appearance.

Ive had this car for almost 2 years. Had to have one transmission put in, other than that no problems. Go to car shows and even took 3rd place with it. It runs great.

I am 47 years old and am probably going thru a midlife crisis. I bought the Mustang yesterday. Crisis over!!! Plus my 17 year old thinks I am totally the greatest!. LOVE the car!!!! Maroon with gray interior. How great is that!

the mach1 is better than the gts because it is built better and more sturdy, and has more horsepower

  • Bang for your buck... - 2003 Ford Mustang

This is my second Mustang. My first Cobra. I am in love with this car. It is a head turner and a blast to drive. I would recommend this car for the most bang for the buck.
