This Year's Model Updates:

Heavily updated is the 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra, which makes 390 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque thanks to the addition of an Eaton supercharger. A new six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels through a 3.55 rear axle ratio. Larger wheels and tires come standard, along with stiffer springs and a tubular cross brace. Cobra convertibles have a cloth top, while both cars get new seats with upgraded leather and suede upholstery. A limited-production Mach 1 model arrives later in the year with a massaged 4.6-liter V8 engine making at least 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, a functional shaker hood with ram-air scoop, black striping, unique leather seating and retro-design Magnum 500 alloy wheels, and, of course, a Mach 460 audio system. Mach 1 can be ordered in a variety of colors with either a manual or automatic transmission. Like the Mustang Bullitt before it, the Mach 1 comes with a lowered, retuned suspension and additional frame rail connectors for a stiffer body. Large 13-inch Brembo front rotors and upgraded calipers are standard.

Standard V6 and V8 GT models change little for 2003. A V6 Pony Package includes 16-inch polished alloy wheels and the GT's scooped hood. All V6 models get a new hood design, and four new colors debut.

Pros:
  • Available V8 power, variety of trim levels, healthy dose of American attitude.
Cons:
  • Archaic structure, aged design.

The re-issue of the Mach 1 Mustang is an excellent performance value for the money. This car has a tremendous amount of low end torque and easily runs the quarter mile in high 13 second range without any modifications, just as from the factory. The Mach has a distinctive muscle car exhaust note that is reminiscent of big block cars from the 60s. One drawback is the interior, which could have been done up with better quality. Fuel tank is relatively small (15 gallons) and requires frequent re-filling , especially if the car is driven hard.

I have loved every minute of owning this vehicle over the last year. SVT and the SVT Owners Association have made it even more enjoyable. The sponsorship by Ford in promoting the SVT community is incredible. This is the Mustang I have waited for Ford to build. The guys at SVT are my heroes.

  • I love my 03 Mach 1 - 2003 Ford Mustang

I waited 2 years for them to decide to build this car. Aanother 7 months to build mine. Its my daily driver. I love it. Has had only minor issues which Ford has immediately taken care of. I have an Azure Blue 5 spd and wouldnt trade it for anything (except maybe the 04 Competition Orange Mach 1). The gas mileage isnt bad, it does require premium, but I knew that when I bought it. Shifts smoothly, sounds beautiful. Super comfortable ride.

Fun to drive. Handling is crisp and responsive. Power is unbelievably raw. Shifting is a tricky with the location of the overdrive. Visability is superb. Would have been great if there had been a hatch like my 74 Mach I. Drivers power seat takes a lot of adjustment to get it in a position that feels comfortable. When tilting the front of the seat up it lifts the entire seat. 6 CD stereo is dynamite, as is the throaty groan from the exhaust.

  • Awesome first car - 2003 Ford Mustang

I received my Mustang for my first car and I have loved driving it for the past three years. It turns heads, provides the get up and go needed for passing on the interstate and has decent milage for a sports car (averages 20mpg in town and on the highway). I have never had even the slightest problem with the reliability of this vehicle. The only thing that concerns me is that it is totally a warm weather vehicle, in the midwest where we can get a few feet of snow at a time, the RWD and light overall weight of the car just is not safe enough even in town on snow-packed streets. Also, for long drives, even my young back begins to hurt. Even with these criticisms, I still love my Mustang.

  • An "Old Dog" with a few new tricks... - 2003 Ford Mustang
    By -

This "dog" is powerful yet obedient, old yet fun, full of attitude yet still civilized enough to handle on a daily basis. Ford’s SVT finally has the complete pkg. by tweaking this 25+ year old chassis to handle the new power with composure. These new adjustments allow the aging Mustang to be very competitive even with todays more expensive sports cars (I.E. Corvette or dare I say Viper) The new seats have high bolstering w/suede inserts that not only look great, but are quite comfortable, yet still functional for spirited driving though all six speeds… need I say more? Dont wait any longer; this "Old Dog" is well-trained and ready to play!

Call it a mid life crisis, but after two family sedans and an SUV, it was time to return to a sports car. I had owned a Vette in my younger days, but marriage and a family brought changes to my lifestyle. Now that they are nearly grown, my hands yearned to grasp the wheel of a sports car. Not quiet being able to afford a Vette and still having two kids currently at home, the Ford Mustang GT convertible was my choice.
