This Year's Model Updates:

The Standard trim level is replaced by the Work trim level. XLT and Lariat models get standard four-wheel antilock brakes, and the XLT gets standard air conditioning. All SuperCab models get a fourth door and horsepower is improved for engines across the board. Option content is shuffled and simplified as Ford reduces the number of optional features.

Pros:
  • Near perfect interior design and materials. Four doors on the SuperCab. Improved engine output. Excellent off-road capability.
Cons:

  • What the Heck? - 1999 Ford F-150

Took a chance and bought this F150 xlt w/ a 4.2 v6 engine w/ 77500 miles on it. Being a Ford truck, I expected at least 200,000 miles out of it. Only got 115,000 before the engine threw a rod. I babied the truck above and beyond what it was called for. During my three years of ownership, replaced 4 tires, o2 sensor, alternator ($600),belts, 2 sets of sparksplugs. And the worst of all, $2900 for a whole new front suspension. Plus alot of little things that adds up to alot of money. I know when you by a used car or truck, you are going to spend a little money to bring it up to standard. But, come on that much on a Ford truck. Im very disappoint and looking for a different truck.

The front left tire has fallen off three times due to ungreasable pressed in steering components. All Ford replacement parts and all of poor quality. One control arm didnt last a year. That was the time I had just finished driving to work at 65MPH and as I pulled in the hospital parking lot the wheel fell off, blocking the entrance. Real nice. Yesterday the brakes went out...period. The thing goes through coils at the rate of one or more a year. The hood latch broke. I had to take the spare tire out to replace the shocks - that stupid system was broke right from the factory. The 4wheel drive is broke, I dont know why yet. I suspect an engage motor. I could go on but no more letters to use!

  • Lots of known Defects - Both Coils & Plugs - 1999 Ford F-150

It is a nice riding pickup with good ergonomics. HOWEVER, there are major known problems with this pickup and the 5.4L Triton engines that Ford refuses to correct without the customer paying for it. First, the ignition coils are VERY prone to fail. I have replaced 4 of them in the last 6 months - 2 being the same coil. There is also a problem with the spark plugs blowing out of the aluminum cylinder head on the passenger side. Again, Ford will not cover this under ANY warranty program and it is a WELL ESTABLISHED DEFECT. Lastly, since the 4 Wheel Drive disengagement spring is very weak,it will likely not shift out of 4 Wheel Hi Range unless you stop the vehicle and back up.

  • Forced to Part with Family Transportation - 1999 Ford F-150

This vehicle was purchased new by my Father in 1999. Following his death in 2001, it was purchased by me. The truck has been incredibly reliable and useful.......serving as an all-purpose work truck. Unfortunately, it does not fit in the garage, and our Homeowners Association (HOA) does not let it remain parked in the driveway. It has interior issues, a current heating/AC issue (??), and an intermittent odometer due to a cracked solder joint (common for this year, with the "fix" described on YouTube). It would make a GREAT vehicle for a student looking for a vehicle with low registration and taxes, wanting minimal insurance coverage, and a high driver position / heavier vehicle / safer in potential accident. It would also be a great vehicle to "flip," if someone had the time, talent, and energy to invest in some repairs. Candidly, Id keep the vehicle, but I cant.

  • Bad Gaskets! - 1999 Ford F-150

The truck has been fine and Ive babied it for six years. In the past three years, its been a third vehicle, so hasnt gotten much use. Now I discovered it needs a head gasket replaced! This is a $2,000 job and I find this unacceptable for a babied, 75,000-mile vehicle. Last Ford I will ever own.

  • LUV my Ford But!!! - 1999 Ford F-150

This is my favorite ford of the 5 I have owned, all 150 and 250 4x4s. However this is the most expensive truck I have owned. I have replaced the auto tranny, head gaskets, instrument cluster, both power door lock units and after several attemps to correct the left rear wheel locking up when applying a cold brake, i just gave up. It will turn heads and is a pleasure to drive when not driving the the local dealer service department! Oh, the top of the engine makes too much noise on a cold start.

  • was the truck of my dreams - 1999 Ford F-150

In june 2001 I bought a 99 modle with only 17000 on it . Since then I had to have 2 coils put in under warr. In 03 for some reason the gasket around the rear sliding window sank in but the dealer would not replace it. and the extended would not cover . again in 03 the trucks drivers door started tearing the meatle at the bottom of the window at the rear corner. The dealer said it was common. not covered under extened warr. now the odometer comes and gos the dealer will fix it if I pay another $50. and it is one of the warr. codes in their computer. There is a drive train vibration from rear. the automatic transmittion sucks and truck dosnt handle.

  • engine noise - 1999 Ford F-150
    By -

My 99 f150 had about 85,000 mile on it and the engine started making noise when I start the truck up when it has been sitting for awhile the engine makes a rattling noise the noise sounds like a rod knock I change the oil every 3 thousand miles. I am not happy with the engine quality I had a chevy blazer I put 240, miles on it plus plowed with it for three years and the engine was still quiet. This pickup is not used for heavy towing I use it back and forth for work and tow a little trailer. I do believe my next truck will be a chevy it has 100, on it right now I am hoping nothing happens I have to let the truck sit and warm up before driving.

  • So far so good - 1999 Ford F-150

Bought my first domestic truck recently and so far it has worked well. Brakes leave a little to be desired. Build quality is not on par with the imports, but Ive come to expect that from the domestic auto makers.
