  • Again? No, thanks. - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I was cruising through one on the weekend, and the Explorer Sport caught my eye. Not to mention, I loved the two door look and it was black! Ive always wanted a black vehicle. Another bonus, it had a sunroof, luggage rack and running boards. I dont think I couldve asked for anything else. It had $10,900 on the windshield and I got it for $9,400 with only 56K on it. I got a pretty good deal. Anyway, its not mid-July and I hate the gas mileage. Ive already replaced the air intake control valve ($225 w/ labor) and now it clicks loudly when I turn my wheels. Someone mentioned the hub bearings. I think my next car will be a Honda, Nissan or Toyota. Thats what I wanted originally.

This has been a wonderful SUV. I just had a wreck in it where I hydroplaned on the Interstate and hit the concrete wall divider. My wife and I were unharmed and the car held up great!

For the most part a good SUV. Have had trouble with the interior. The arm rest broke off and the driver side seat is sagging from getting in and out. The 4 wheel drive will go through anything, the best ive seen. Been a couple recalls with the recent having to disconnect the cruise control due to fire hazard. Frustrating trying to fit stuff in small vehicle but it is a 2 door sport

  • All good, but transmission - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

I bought my Explorer with 46,xxx miles on it. Now at 146,xxx miles, Ive grown really fond of almost everything about the truck. Except the fact that Ive had to rebuild the transmission twice! It went out once right before 100,000 and again about 40k later! The moonroof leaks pretty bad, too. Its treated me great otherwise, but Im sick of replacing the transmission and the 18 MPG, too.

  • Decent Used SUV - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Had to get a car quickly as I was turning in my lemon 2005 Saturn L300. I passed by a used car lot close to where I live and found my black Exlorer Sport 4x4. So far, this vehicle has been pretty much trouble free and handles decently for a vehicle of this type. I really enjoy having a 2 door and only hope Ford will bring it back.

  • Dependable Small SUV - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I have over 140K mile bought the vehicle with only 6K. Bumpy rode but not a bad vehicle at all. Just out grown. Bought the vehicle when it was only my son and I now Im married with additional 2 kids. Need more room now. ***Not a family car*** But dependable and reliable. Just the normal maintenance needed so far.

  • Been a good one so far - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I recently bought my Explorer and so far it has been a very enjoyable experience. The vehicle is very dependable and fun to drive. I like the look of the vehicle and the interior design. My only complaint is the fuel economy. I average around 18.5 to 19 mpg. I would have liked to seen a little better gas mileage. Overall I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Fun to drive but too many problems. Timing chain rattle at 43K, steering wheel vibration in parking maneuvers, faulty rear window wiper, and premature rust of rear bumper and side bars. Mechanical problems are covered under certified vehicle and another extended warranty, but Im on my own with exterior surface rusting on a 3 year old vehicle.

  • Hard Ride - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

While I liked the overall appearance (interior and exterior) and didnt mind the gas mileage (21 on the highway), this is the roughest riding vehicle Ive ever owned. For that reason I am trading it in and buying something smoother on the roads. Any bump with the Explorer Sport and you get jolted pretty good.

  • Great little automatic 4x4 SUV - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

Bought in 2003 w/60000 miles on it. Now has 120,000 and still runs like new with only regular maintenance. We have family that live in the Sierras at the end of a dirt and gravel road. This little 4x4 always makes it up there no problem with all-season tires; mud, snow, whatever. I added a class 3 bolt-on 4 point hitch receiver and it tows a 3500lb boat/trailer no problem. Just had dings removed and repainted same dark teal metallic and it looks like MONEY!
