  • Great Truck - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Traded a 97 F150 2WD Reg Cab, since I needed the back seat (for a 3 year old). Short wheel base makes for stiff/bumpy ride, but as long as you dont drive too fast, its not a problem. Engine is very nice, and has plenty of power. 4WD works great, and the short wheel base helps in off road situations. MPG could be better, but it is a truck! Cargo room is great, plenty of room for a sub woofer, and a few days worth of clothes, and paint supplies. I upgraded the stereo the day I bought it, so not sure how the stock stereo is. Tires are larger than expected, and treat/pattern is great for around town and the occasional light off roading. GREAT TRUCK for mid 20s people with 1 child.

This thing rattles and squeaks like its 30 years old. I previously owned a 98 Explorer Sport, which influenced my decision to purchase this vehicle. The 2001 has a more powerful engine and handles a little bit better, but every other part of this vehicle has made a turn for the worse.

  • Tuff little truck, couldnt be happier! - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I love this truck! Only problem so far was covered by warrenty. Size is perfect for someone like me, no kids, 2 dogs, unmarried. Handles like a dream in the snow and carries 4 snow boards, 4 people and all the gear without any trouble or feeling weighed down. Surf board fits on top and running boards make it easy enough to strap the board on top. This truck has been very cheap to own and so far has only required maintenance to keep running; it has over 125k miles on it! Cant say enough good things about it and I will drive it until it wont start anymore. Switched out the stock shocks for Monroe and couldnt be happier. Its the only mod I made and I will never go back to stock shocks.

  • Damn Ball Joints - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Overall its been good, Only issues are squeaky brakes whenever I brake between the speeds of 35mph to 50mph since day one Took the truck in 3 times regarding this...never could find anything they replaced the brake pads only once. EGR sensor failed. And 2 replaced ball joints in 2 years. I dont off-road either. But its been dependable.

  • I think I made a HUGE mistake! - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

This was, unfortunately an Impulse buy. Ill NEVER do that again! Rides as if you are riding on solid rubber tires. The rattles are unbelievable! If you test drive one of these, take it over just the littliest bit of road imperfections, ouch! Gas mileage is shameful! Got a Big Wallet?..youll need it! 5 Years to go & dreading it!

Great vehicle for a teenager. Not a great vehicle for a young couple.

  • Great SUV with easy modifications - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

My 3rd Explorer Sport. Lowered by 1.5" - front adjustable, rear blocks, Bilstein shocks and 275/60-17 tires improve handling 100%. 2.5" Flowmaster exhaust, K&N air filter and cool air intake and performance chip (ECU) increases HP to 250+ with 21-22 miles per gallon highway. These changes made the Explorer Sport an exceptional truck in handling and driveability, ride comfort and performance (faster than the V-8 Explorer). Ive driven it to Florida and back to New York with 3 passengers and loaded, including a roof carrier. Id much rather drive the Sport than my V-8 Crown Victoria on long trips now. Too bad, they stopped making it. Great truck.

  • Rides Like an SUV - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

I had read some previous reviews on the site, and I feel they are somewhat inacurate. This car is not a Grand Cherokee or an Expedition, as reflected by its selling price. This is a 2 door SUV with a strong engine, extremely capable transmission, and the ride of a SUV. I dont think Ford ever designed this car to ride like a sedan. Having had mine for seven months now, I am very pleased with its performance.

  • Reliable Transportation - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
    By -

I bought my 01 Sport after my 99 Sport was totalled 2 years ago with around 118,000 miles on it. Ive never had to anything other than routine oil changes, etc and Ive put about 20,000 miles on it. Im not easy on cars either. The only issues Ive had with it is that it is hard to start (it doesnt crank immediately) and the disc changer stopped working. Unfortunately, someone rear-ended me and totalled this one 2 weeks ago. As long as only having 2 doors (NOT fun for travelling or people with children) and bad gas mileage (15-16 mpg city) dont bother you, this is a great SUV. I would recommend an Explorer in a heartbeat.
