Overview & Reviews
The 1999 Ford Explorer gets exterior revisions including new foglamps, rocker panel moldings, wheel moldings, running boards and wheels. Harvest Gold, Chestnut, Deep Wedgewood, Spruce Green and Tropic Green replace Light Prairie Tan, Desert Violet, Light Denim Blue, Pacific Green and Evergreen Frost on the color chart. New options include a reverse sensing system and rear load leveling. Side-impact airbags are also newly available.
- Gas mileage is not the strong suit for any vehicle in this segment. The Explorer is no exception.

work horse - 1999 Ford Explorer
By gerald kissner - July 12 - 2:00 amThis truck took a bad rap for the tire thing. Ive owned my from 99 and just now put in the shop for the the first breakdown--a thermostat gone bad in 90+ degree Texas.

I guess I got a good one - 1999 Ford Explorer
By 99Limited - May 30 - 2:00 amFor the most part, and probably since I have the extended warranty, my 99 Ltd with 4.10 LS and rear load leveling (air shocks) has served me very well over three years now. Sure, its been in the shop, no more than my Integra, Camry or others Ive had. Most problems have been with minor items dying such as the rear wiper motor (2x), rear gate shocks (2x), door locks not working from remote and front brake grinding (dealer probably over-tightened the lugs when rotating wheels). I recently replaced ALL fluids ($400US) at 40k and it runs better than new. Trust me, it works and will probably extend the life of your "Exploder".

Great SUV - 1999 Ford Explorer
By CRM74 - May 25 - 2:00 amI purchased my truck new almost 4 years ago, and have had no problems. It handles great in poor weather, its reliable, and the sound system is superb. As for fuel economy, its an SUV, so its not great. Compared to other SUVs though, its not bad.

Great suv - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Steven Buchmann - October 16 - 2:30 pmThere are problems with the radio display failing, but its a pretty easy fix if you have time to learn how to repair it. Other than that Ive experienced absolutely no problems with the vehicle.

Now its time to move on - 1999 Ford Explorer
By R.Craig - July 1 - 6:23 amThis has been a great suv for us, I drove over a long distance and also pulled in the same. Over the time that Ive had it I spent very little on repair.

Fun to drive! - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Chad Williams - February 9 - 2:00 amI just bought it this year new. It had 74,000 miles on it. I now have about 96,000 miles on it. About 5,000 miles ago I had to have the transmission rebuilt because of the value bodies in the trans were failing. I am glad I took out the extended warr. they covered the rebuild except for the $100 deductable. If I hadnt had the warr. it would have cost me $3200. Other than the transmission the SUV has been great. I have loved driving it since I got in it in January. It has been reliable. Even when it was having tans problems, it was still going and going.
