This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2000 Ford Explorer, a color-keyed, two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel (with auxiliary audio, climate and speed control) is now standard on Eddie Bauer models. XLT Sport/Eddie Bauer/Limited models with 5.0-liter V8s receive a trailer-towing package as standard equipment. The XL is available only for fleet sales, and the XLS replaces the XL Appearance as the base retail model.

Pros:
  • A commanding view of the road, multiple engine choices, one of the most comfortable and commodious cabins in its class.
Cons:
  • Trucklike ride, poor gas mileage with V8 engine.

I bought this vehicle in September of 2003, and for the most part, I have enjoyed driving it. The only major problem I have had has been the transmission, which needed about $2000 worth of work (only part of which was covered by my so-called Used Car warranty). Tip: Dont take it to a Ford dealer for service. A reputable place in your area is probably just as good, if not better and smarter. Lesson learned: Read the fine print of your warranty. Mine would not pay for "genuine Ford parts (gags)," only after-market parts, which the dealer would not do.

I was very happy with the 4.0 liter engine, although it was a little taxed when hauling a heavy trailer. It seems perfectly matched with the smooth- shifting transmission. The 4wd performed well in winter and the AUTO mode kicked in when required.

Great family vehicle - largest cargo area in class. Just throw EVERYTHING in the back! Great reliability...NOTHING has happened to it. Leased then bought cheap (bank did NOT want it back). Much better to drive in Oregon rain than our Honda Accord. Would buy a 2004 next, but they look like a mini-van. WARNING! Ford dealership service dept. is not good!

  • Car looks great, rides O:K but - 2000 Ford Explorer

18,000 mile & needed a new transmission, and I got a re-Mfg. one put in, thats with the dealer does when they go. Also multiple recalls, including, tires, air bags and also seat belts. Then they changed electrical harness & and in the beginning the oil sending switch. Car has made me plenty unhappy. Yeah they might be better than the Blazer I once rented but that really dont say much if you know what I mean.

  • Love it - 2000 Ford Explorer

Im very satisfied with my Explorer. I bought it used about 8 months ago. Other than a back wiper blade that had to be bent a little to make it work right I have had no problems with it. It has good performance (I have the larger V6.) Its just a fun car to drive. Gas mileage is about 21 mpg hiway and about 13 city. It has the usual truck ride which is bumpier than a car. Im looking forward to upgrading to a 2002+ Explorer sometime in the future to get the wider wheel base and smoother ride.

  • Versatile 4WD SUV That Rocks! - 2000 Ford Explorer

Weve had our 2000 Explorer for nearly two years, and we really love it. Its very comfortable on the highway, and very capable off-road we use ours regularly to get to a Wyoming cabin at the end of a seriously rough, four mile 4-low climb. Even with four people and a big load, its great. Drive it slowly and correctly in 4-low and it does awesome. Although power was somewhat disappointing orginally, a 2.5" Dynomax cat-back exhaust and K&N cold air intake cured that. Overall, we love ours and plan to keep it a long time!

  • 2000 Ford XLS - 2000 Ford Explorer
    By -

Overall pleased with FordXLS performance. Rides somewhat hard.Overall handles well. Steering somewhat over sensitive giving a truck- like response. Had series of problems with electrical system governing dash warning lights,( ABS, Air bag and engine). Took World technicians three extended repair visits to finally solve problem. Finish on one of luggage racks excessively worn. Ford is hedging on repairing/replacing.Reported prior to warranty expiration.

  • Traded the Mustang - 2000 Ford Explorer

I got my 2000 Ford Explorer Sport earlier this month when I traded my 1998 Ford Mustang in for it. I needed much more room for my things, with being an art major in school, and a musician. I liked how the Explorer Sport looked rugged and tough-not weak and flimsy like other SUVs. This one works great for people with busy lifestyles, with things to do and stuff to carry. Its fun to pile all of your friends into the Explorer and head out to the beach, or mountains, with the windows down and radio up. Its very fun to drive- I get a lot of compliments on this vehicle.

I normly by a new vehical every couple years but I enjoy this explorer to much to get rid of it. Its ride on the highway is very good, off road is rough.Driving this in the winter is great. The automatic 4 wheel drive was a great invention.
