- Gas mileage is not the strong suit for any vehicle in this segment. The Explorer is no exception.

Ford is the best - 1999 Ford Explorer
By tami526 - August 6 - 11:17 pmI have the all wheel drive model with a 210 horsepower V6. It is the best truck in the snow. It has saved us a few times. This is the 2nd Explorer I have owned and will not be the last. I have not done any major work to it. There is no comparison with anything in its class. Its the greatest.

Great Truck!! Review By Picky Car Buff - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Gary Marchlewicz - July 21 - 10:00 amNo problems after 54K miles. Very solid construction. My Chevys never go this long without needing repairs. I have the smaller V6. Pleanty of power, but not a racer. The ride is rough, but Its a truck! The under carriage is looking a little rusty. The paint still looks great. I am 6 4" tall. This truck is a little too cramped for me. My wife and I vacation in it every year anyway. I want to move up to an expedition, but I dont want to give up my perfectly reliable little truck. I had the Firestones replaced with Pirelli Scorpions. Awesome tires! Its only 2 wheel drive. I load up 240 Lbs of sand tubes in the winter . Cuts right through the snow!!

When repairs are needed, theyre major - 1999 Ford Explorer
By radioiowa - July 9 - 4:01 pmI purchased the XLT with about 50K miles and am happy to report that I am now at 155K. Overall, its very sure-footed in the snow and roomy enough to haul the family and the dog. On the down side, repairs in the last three years have been major. Ive replaced two fuel pumps in 5 years, the rear differential, put in a new transmission and am now dealing with intermittent, unidentifiable stall/start problems (the car stalls while driving down the road and/or refuses to start for hours but no one can seem to find the problem- leaving me stuck on the road with no warning). The truck has received routine maintenance religiously and has never been driven off road.

The best SUV in America - 1999 Ford Explorer
By bobby smith - July 1 - 9:12 pmI purchased this vehicle with 182,000 miles on it and it has run real good for me. It still doesnt use any oil, and all the power features work 100%. It also does real good on fuel 16-19 city, 21-24+ highway with the sohc v6 engine. The Eddie Bauer leather seats are real comfortable. It has a sharp turning radius, and the 4x4 auto gets great traction.

Absolutely Love my Explorer - 1999 Ford Explorer
By BB - May 23 - 10:52 amI purchased my Explorer after my GMC Sonoma was totaled. My back was injured so I was needed something comfortable and reliable. I found it in the Explorer. I have had only two mechanical problems: locking mechanism went out on the drivers door this year ($500incl labor) and the GEM module went out so I dont have washer fluid on the windshield ($300 for part from Ford). Otherwise very reliable. Overall great SUV.

Excellent SUV - 1999 Ford Explorer
By J. OBrien - May 3 - 10:00 amI Love It.... this SUV has been fun to drive, reliable and it handles very well in bad weather. Other than 2 minor recalls and the Firestone mess, I have no mechanical problems at all with my Explorer. I put Pirelli Scorpions on to replace the Firestones...what a difference. This truck handles like a dream.

Just keeps running - 1999 Ford Explorer
By grahame - March 19 - 8:52 pmPurchased new and maintained. Kind of wish it would give me excuse to get rid of it, after almost nine years it would be nice to drive something different. It just keeps running and at this stage is not worth much as a trade in. It hauls construction materials, has pulled trailer, been in Northern Ontario and Quebec in the winter and is safe and reliable. I read about people with transmission issues and drive train issues but so far its been bulletproof.

Great Bang for the Buck! - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Fedgar - March 18 - 8:47 pmI am long-time Ford fan. Have owned three Explorer, hands-down one of the best products ever made by Ford. Plan on buying an 06 soon. Will definitely get the 4 door next time, but the two-door is very maneuverable in city traffic. Easy to park, very reliable.

Reliable and Comfortable - 1999 Ford Explorer
By David - January 7 - 8:42 amBought used w/20,000 and am now up to 170,000 - no major problems. Replaced the ball joints was the biggest cost item. The Explorer has always started and is great in the snow, 4WD is superb and easy to operate. Had a Jeep Cherokee, which also was great in 4WD, but the Explorer is much more comfortable and roomy. Visibility is also very good. Worth a lot more than its valued at, not sure why it gets any low ratings (because Its American I think).
