This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • One of the best I have owned - 2002 Ford Explorer

This vehicle has been one of the best I have ever owned. Unlike what some extremist "greenies" have said about SUVs being gas hogs, this one is not! On longer trips while pulling a small travel trailer, it consistantly got 17MPG and on a couple of tankfuls it got 22MPG !! I would buy another one - no question!

Ford 2002 eddie bauer 4x4 v-8 . Wont go into park with ease. Jumps out of park. Rattles in the driver door. Sounds like valve is sticking. 2 dealerships have done nothing to fix the problems. NEVER AGAIN will I Buy A FORD.

.I drove a Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner and the Ford Exployer. I thought the 2002 Ford Expolyer was superior to the others to driving, comfort and style. The standard 2002 Ford Exployer XLS comes with everything I need, (Except Auto Trans) At that time Ford had a $1500 rebate. I thought that was great until I visited a Ford Dealer in another town. They had a $2000 rebate. I went back to my orignal dealer. He met the rebate plus put is a CD player and mats. I paid cost less $2000, plus $190.00 in doc fees. I have 2500 miles on the Exployer. The new suspension on the 2002 is fantastic. Thanks Edmunds

  • FORD!!!!! Fix your transmission problem - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

Reading other reviews on this and other Ford Explorer models, confirms that ours was not a fluke. The dealer couldnt understand why we had transmission problems when Ford never acknowledged anyone else having problems. I thought maybe we had bought a lemon. Come to find out, there are a lot of lemons out there. To bad for Ford.

Dont know if it as good as my 1996 (130,000 miles and very strong) but seems really solid with no trouble. If Ford could get its service together this would be the SUV to buy.

Have 4300 miles on an XLT model. The whole family loves it. This truck has made Ford customers out of us.

  • Its a Ford, not a Lincoln - 2002 Ford Explorer

So far no problems. My only concern is the so called maintenance free automatic 5-speed transmission. No dip stick to check fluid level. Love the Michelin tires. Drives smooth. It feels secure when driving on the highway. The V-6 feels like a V-8. The only other minor thing I should mention is the rear trim around the rear window. It seems to be separating. The vehicle is only 8 months old.

  • Nice ride - 2002 Ford Explorer

Have had vehicle for 1½ years now. Enjoy driving it and use it for work. Starter went out at 39,000 mi and was out of warranty, however Ford did assist in replacement costs. 4.0L V-6 not too peppy, but performs OK. Rear air vents are too far back for 2nd row seat (sunroof). Brakes & rotors had to be replaced at 53,000 mi. Wish I had bought used instead of new, paid $31,000, within 6 months KBB value was $26,000. 5 spd O/D transmission shifts often.

  • Love the V-8 - 2002 Ford Explorer

This v-8 is strong. I think it is the best feature of this SUV. This is why I love to drive it.
