This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • Nice but noisy - 2002 Ford Explorer

Had water leak in windshied at 20000. Windshield was reset and water leak cured, but, wind noise above 35 MPH is now intolerable. Resetting windshield no help. Ford factory claims this is a design problem. Cannot be fixed. Am very unhappy Ford owner at this.

I recently traded in a 2002 CRV for a Ford Explorer. Some may question this decision however after driving the explorer, you would make the same choice. The Honda was a good car but not truck. The Explorer fits my lifestyle and gives me a comfortable smooth ride. The only question I had was reliability. Well thats still up in the air. I also made the decision base on all of the world wide turmoil. I guess I rather be putting money into a company that is American, not to say I would purchase a quality foreign car. The bottom line is I am extremely happy with my Explorer.

We have had transmission problems, rear differential problems, leakage problems with back window, and door lock problems and that is all I can remember at this moment. No more for me!!

We bought our Explorer second hand 2 years ago and have been very happy so far. No unscheduled service trips. We previously had a 1995 Explorer (for 10 years and only one O2 sensor went wrong) and were looking for the same type of versatility. Huge improvement inside and we went from the 6 cylinder to the V8 for a small increase in fuel cost but much quieter and smoother acceleration.

Bought our v8 Eddie Bauer Explorer about 3 months ago - just coming up on 3,000 miles - We love it - great handling for an suv, especially considering that my previous vehicle was a saab 9-3. Holds lots, rides well

I had a 95 explorer sport, it ran great, but the handling was poor. I believe the new 2002 feels like a car ride to me.

We like the ride and handling of the 2002 compared to the 1999 xlt we recently sold. Highway trip was great vehicle performed well and suspension is mcuh better than our 99

We owned several Explorers before the 2002 but this was by far the best handling and with the small V-8 had all the power we needed. The V-8 was less noisy than the high revving V-6 and was not much worse for mileage. The Explorer has plenty of headroom and the interior design is very user friendly.

Consumer Reports review is biased. I had test-drives of all compatible Japanese SUVs, before I bought the Explorer. Highlander is only a Camery pretending to be an SUV. Pathfinders leg room for the rear seats is too small. Explore costs less but offers better package, more power, more cargo space, and better performance in Explorer. Explorer is comfortable on the road. For more than year, no mechanical problems have ever happened. As for the gas mileage, at least its no worse than the Japanese SUVs. On the highway, it can reach about 22 miles a gallon, sometimes even with air conditioning on. The average gas mileage is 18.

This is my first Suv and I really, really like it. It doesnt drive like your typical SUV because of the suspension. Combine that with all the other features and Id recommend an Explorer to anyone looking for a fun, reliable SUV.
