This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • Job #1 vs. Job#2 - 2002 Ford Explorer

Be careful when purhasing an explorer now. There was a change in standard equipment on 1/28/02. The radio was upgraded, fog lights were added, the mirror has auto dim, seats are low back, the steering wheel comes leather wrapped. The delivery price difference is about $500 more than the job #1 price. Unfortuneately, the sales staff wont make it completely clear that one car should be cheaper than the other. For them its a 2002 explorer XLT. As a buyer, you must be aware of this and protect yourself on the bid. Dont use the edmunds invoice price for these vehicles, as their current price reflects invoice for only the job #2 product. Pay attention

Too many ominous problems. The transmission has never shifted very smoothly. The interior pieces are flimsy and some have been replaced. The rear mid-gate just cracked. The radio overheats and the paint is lousy. On average I am the lone occupant and driver and have always been careful to take care of my cars. Im glad the family car is a 2002 Expedition. Its quality is much better and holds up to kids.

It has been a great vehicle until the rear differential started making noise. It needed rebuilt, a total overhaul. I was told Ford was having trouble with this on the Explorers. Ford made the repairs, did an excellent job, and it is back to being as good as new. (However good that might be) I do expect another failure, but was promised it would be covered under warranty inspite of milage. That is the only problem I have had.

  • The worse car anyone can buy - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

I bought this vehicle 8 months ago and let me begin by telling you how terrible this vehicle is. Since October, my braking system, shock system, rear air conditioning, timing belts and finally the torch converter have all went bad. Everything listed had to be replaced except the torch converter the Ford dealership is refusing to correct the problem. I purchased this vehicle with 22,000 miles and quite frankly this car is a piece of dirt. I am currently seeking to buy a Jeep Cherokee and love it so far. Just in case anyone reading this in the Knoxville area DO NOT do business with Ted Russell Ford.

  • Top Notch - 2002 Ford Explorer

This vehicle is top notch. The handling and comfort are incredible. The gas mileage is comparable considering the vehicles weight, engine type, etc. For those who complain about gas consumption, purchase a 4 cylinder compact car and sacrifice the luxury and class of the Explorer. Overall, I am thrilled. I was a devout Grand Marquis driver until I drove the Explorer. WOW! Ford, you continue to have a happy customer!

  • Almost 1 Year Old - 2002 Ford Explorer

Getting on to the first year mark. Have the 4X4, 4.6 V8. The truck runs great, looks great, sounds great ( no interior squeaks - still as tight as the day we bought it ). The ride is stable, sure footed, very nice at highway speeds, seats are comfortable on long trips ( did the New England to Florida Le Mans this past year ).

  • 1 Year and Counting - 2002 Ford Explorer

Approaching 15,000 miles with no problems to report. Independent suspension is a major upgrade to the previous generation Explorer and results in a much more friendly ride, while still maintaining off road capability. Have no regrets in buying this vehicle or in choosing it over GM, Toyota, and Honda.

  • Great family car for the money - 2002 Ford Explorer

Love the third row, comes in very handy. Climbing in and out is relatively easy. SUV with 3rd row, front and rear a/c, adjustable pedals, upgraded premium sound, running boards and tow package under $30,000. My only regret is not getting the V8 and the Eddie Bauer package for just $1500 more.

  • Worth the money - 2002 Ford Explorer

I bought mine when they first came out around 7/01. Have 20K miles on it now. At first, there were many squeeks and rattles around the drivers door. Dealership "fixed" 7 times. Theyve gone away now. Comfortable ride and good handling. V6 adequete. Likes to shift to 5th gear too easily. Worth a test drive. Paid 26100 for XLT Leather, third row, V6, premium sound.

  • DEJA VU 98 & 02 - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

I had a 98 Explorer that gave me nothing but heartaches the engine repeatedly stalled. I bought the all new 2002 Explorer and was immediatly impressed on how trouble free it was until I hit 19000 miles. I was driving down a road As the light was turning red I took my foot off the accelerator and at that point the truck accelerated and I was standing on the brake pedal and the vehicle would not stop. I missed another vehicle the explorer did a 360 and I finally could reach the ignition to shut it off. Ford told me the problem was a KINKED accelerator Cable and this is the first time that this has ever happened with this model.
