This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

    Explorer has a weak V-6. The vehicle is unreliable. I have had numerous problems with the drivetrain, the transmission, and the rear end. I cannot trust this vehicle. On top of that it gets poor gas mileage.

    Im an old station wagon buff, but couldnt find anything to replace my aging Crown Victoria. Swore Id never buy an suv, but nothing else on the market did what I needed. Was about to buy a minivan when a saleswoman suggested I try the 2002 Explorer XLT. Couldnt believe it! 4 wheel drive, 3rd row seat, plenty of space for my music gear, nice leather interior, great handling, power sunroof, perfect size... I was sold. Its great looking to boot.

    The only problem I had in over 50,000 miles was the sensors on the 4WD - they had to be replaced once and cleaned several times.

    List of repairs under warranty 1) Rear ABS sensor 2) Gasket around thermostat 3) Rear Differential 4) Pitted rotors 5) rotors out of round. Poor quality is the norm with the Explorer. Only benefit is Ford dealer/customer services does seem to care and has been very helpful.

    I purchased this 2002 Explorer for my wife and we just love it. It has adjustable pedals and the entire is very functional. The v-6 is suprisingly quick and responsive. My wife is 51" and has very good visibilty in this truck. We traded in a 2001 4 dr Tahoe and we really do not see much in the power loss and we are saving a ton in gas. Overall, we are very happy with the purchase. In fact, I have ordered a F-250 and cant wait to get it.

    great ride, a lot better than my Jeep Grand Cherokee,gas mileage is okay, (17mpg highway). I love the 6 disc in dash CD changer, also the 3rd row seat which is very comfy and easier accessed than the Chevy Tahoe. I had 12k mi on the truck with no problems whatsoever, althought Fords reliability is always a big issue, especially with the transmission. My brother bought an Excursion Limited, and he had to take it in to replace a new transmission. Thats a bad reputation for Ford.

    Delivered in perfect condition and only been in for service once in 32K miles. Much better handling and ride than my 91 Explorer. Only complaints are funky climate control (sometimes runs AC in winter on defogger with cold air) and occasional rough auto tranny shift at low speed. Otherwise we are very happy with quality. Extremely comfortable on a long drive. Handling is very good even at high speeds;

    Excellent ride quality. I was suprised how smooth a ride a vehicle this SUV gives without compromising control. IRS is wonderful, as is the active 4X4. Comfortable interior.

    I am very disappointed with the Ford manufacturers. I recently found out that there is a design flaw in Ford trucks from years 2000, 2001 and 2002. This is a flaw with the "air intake". You could drive through three inches of water and the air intake is placed so low that it will "suck up" the water causing the engine to lock up and have to be replaced. Ford refuses to take responsibility for their design flaw and will NOT do a recall. Yet they leave the insurance companies to cover all expenses for their mistakes in design.
