Still Running Great - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Maureen - November 19 - 2:36 pmIve had my Explorer Sport for several years & and now at 133k & several WI winters later its still running well. The alternator is the only significant part thats failed. Keep up with the regular maintenance & you shouldnt have problems. Perfect for driving around town & for hauling things. Ill probably be replacing this one with another 02 or 03 since those were the last years for the 2DR.

Still Going - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Chazmo - July 2 - 11:47 amOther reviewers and friends of mine have "knocked" the Ford Explorer but my Explorer has been very good to me. It is a rugged, well-built vehicle that has proven reliable over the years.

solid dependable vehicle - 1999 Ford Explorer
By chris - January 24 - 10:10 pmWeve had this car about five years and really had very few problems with it. We call it the snow beast as its awd is fantastic in the snow. Ive had a couple other 4wd trucks and this is just much more competent in poor conditions. It has the 302 V8 and can pull a trailer without complaining and is comfortable to ride in and drive. It beats you up at the pump, but it averages about 17mpg in mixed driving, so its not much worse than your average minivan, suv, or pickup truck without awd! It beats the Jeep Cherokee I had prior to this by about 4mpg and it had the 4.0l I6 with part time 4wd,

Awesome 4 the Buck - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Ernie/Miami - September 30 - 2:00 amIncredible enough but I have yet 2 change my rear brakes since the purchase of car in 1999. Talk about reliable! I have close to 80000 miles and I have not had a single engine problem. I rate this car a must buy, except 4 us tall guys.

Now That the Tire Flap Is Behind Us... - 1999 Ford Explorer
By Mountain - August 13 - 2:00 amAll things considered, Ford did a pretty fair job of making things right during the Tire Crisis with Firestone. We have new tires, and we enjoy our Explorer. Its still a truck, though, no getting around that - just tromp on the gas, and youll get the point: little acceleration, big noise. Still its pretty, has a large interior, and our Limited Package is extremely comfortable. It is a great "utility vehicle," and its good with long hauls.

Good vehicle - 1999 Ford Explorer
By cjweb - March 13 - 9:49 amMy wife and I have owned this truck for several years and have about 90k miles on it now. It has been very reliable and easy to maintain. I had the the ball joints replaced at about 70k miles, as the steering seemed slightly vague on-center. That cured the problem completely. I also had the EGR valve replaced at about 75k miles, and I had one of the chips in the ignition key quit working one time, which required a new key. Aside from those three problems, it has been a joy to own. With the 302 V8, the fuel economy is about what youd expect (14 city/18 hwy) but the AWD is fantastic in the snow. Ive owned 4WD pickups and the Explorer is much more capable. I would recommend this vehicle.

Best Vehicle Ever! - 1999 Ford Explorer
By calicobobtail - March 11 - 11:41 pmI know you wont believe me, but this is the best vehicle we have ever had. It is approaching 175,000 miles with virtually NO major repairs. I commute 30 miles each way to work, never have been broken down, and no problems at all. I purchased at 90,000 miles. It is a little narrow in the front seating, so a large person would probably be uncomfortable. 4WD works awesome the gas mileage is killing us though. We pull our horse trailer and also large hay wagons for our horses. It has the power to do it.
