This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • Well, its an SUV - 2002 Ford Explorer

I bought my Explorer In June of 2006 with 71,000 miles on it. And now it has 120,000 miles on and it is Sept 2007. I have used and abused this car way beyond what any car should go through. And I have to say it has stood up pretty well, I have taken it on many many road trips. And it has only left my stranded on the side of the road twice, once dude to a dead battery and was in the middle of the Arizona desert and that almost killed but im still alive! And the second time was due to the transmission going out. Ive had spent about 4 thousand on repars and up keep, but thats not bad compared to some of the explorer horrior stories. and the other major repair done was the 4WD had 2 all replaced

I love my ford explorer, dont get my wrong but the gas mileage is terrible, especially with the prices shooting up!

  • Electrical Demons - 2002 Ford Explorer

Love my Explorer except for the electrical demons! The power lock on the drivers side only works when the car is turned on, the lights under the outside mirrors stay on for way too long, sometimes the brake lights and interior lights stay on after the car is turned off. All that being said, theres so much space and Ford did a good thing when they added the third row. Thinking about a 2006, but since the resale on the 2002 is low, dont know if I can swing it!

This vehicle has been very good to me. The only possible drawback is the level of service I received from the dealer. They seem to have trouble getting the few fixes that I have needed right the first time. Luckily, I bought an extended full service contract on the vehicle, which Ive probably broken even with for service repairs and oil changes. ($890/3yrs)

Great acceleration and mobility in heavy traffic. Fairly quiet. All options for the 2002 Eddie Bauer series are standard with 2004 same models.

  • Good car to own - 2002 Ford Explorer

I like the room and the way it handles. The gas mileage is ok for highway. I get about 17.5 miles highway, stated for V8 is 15 miles. I do a lot of highway driving. I love my sun/moon roof. The only thing I do not like is the factory runnig board, they should not be attached to body. Collects to much snow and mud. should come with the sport (pipes) running boards. Other than that I would buy another one

  • Rattle - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

The only problem after owning the vehicle for 7-8 months is that there is a rattle coming from the front end. Its not like it jumps out and hits you, but at speeds below 30 MPH and somewhat rough roads it really starts to sing. It reminds of when my radial bushing starts to go on my 91 Explorer. What scares me is taking it to the dealer to only have them say that they cant hear or feel it.

The vehicle rides well and has plenty of cargo room. Would like it better if the back seat would fold completely down instead of leaving an angle. I like the gas mileage but would enjoy a higher one.

  • Do Not Buy - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

I love/Hate this vehicle. It drives great it handles very well and it looks good. But I am sick of things going wrong. The AC lasted a month. the back glass dam near fell off. The child locks would trap people in the back seat. An engine sensor died. the passenger window whistles. An idler pulley bearing went out and threw the belt. The drivers seat is loose and the dam black panels between the side windows are fading out. If I would have know this I would not have purchased this vehicle.

  • In addition to my other review - 2002 Ford Explorer

I just walked outside last night to find my back hatch cracked in half by the Ford symbol. This is apparently an often occurrence with this model, but Ford will not pay to fix it even though I have the Premium Care Plan. Im on my fourth transmission now (at 56,000 miles) and I forgot to add that the six CD changer broke right after I bought this SUV brand new. Its a pretty, comfortable, fun, lemon of an SUV. Hope others have had better luck because I will never buy a Ford SUV again.
