This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

Moved up from 2001 Sport Track, appreciate added and updated comfort. Rear seat awkward to enter/exit, a little hard for regular folks. Engine and driveline excellent, brakes and steering exceptional. Clean style, a little upmarket and more capable Honda Accord. Use vehicle for business travel in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah and appreciate safety of 4 wheel drive.

  • Love It, But Very Unreliable - 2002 Ford Explorer

I want to say that I do really like this car when its working. Tranny went out at 30k and now again at 55k. When I asked the service superisor if it was my fault, I was told it is due to junky parts and that I could not have done anything to stop this from happening. Not a good sign. Other problems include back hatch rattling open constantly, water pump replaced, wiper motors gave out, paint between doors bubbling. Doesnt like to start when weather is between 30 and 35 F. Sometimes dies in reverse when first started. It is comfy, loads of room for those tall people, and decent gas mileage for a big SUV.

I love this car. I feel safe and I have confidence that it will get me through the back roads to work. I like the seat controls for the driver, intermitent wipers, climate control and all the cargo space. The third seat is a real nice feature. The pick-up is great and it holds the road fine when next to passing trucks.

Purchased a new 2002 explorer and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Since it now has a 3rd row seat, i was able to use this as my family car and avoid the minivan club. no problems or regrets at 750 miles.

  • 2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4WD - 2002 Ford Explorer

This is the first Ford Explorer I have ever owned and have been quite impressed with it. I was surprised at how easily the 4.0 liter engine pulled my boat and utility trailer. The Explorer is also quicker than I had expected. My only complaint (however minor) is the comfort of the front bucket seats on the XLS model. Otherwise, I find the Explorer to be a great value.

  • It EXPLODED! - 2002 Ford Explorer

I HAD pretty good luck with my Explorer...until yesterday. I was literally just driving (NO BUMPS) down the road yesterday and the whole back window EXPLODED into my truck. The metal the encases the window was also completely bent out. I will now be without a car for at least a week and a half with no real solution for getting around. The dealership claims that they have seen this problem a lot recently and that its a design flaw. How about a RECALL? Someone could have been seriously hurt if they had been in the backseat!

This is an excellent car to drive in snow, rain and on a sunny day. Commfortable interior with the 3rd seet surprice additin.

  • Very Bad Choice - 2002 Ford Explorer

Bought it new thinking that with the redesign I was a buying very good and affordable SUV. I was wrong. Had multiple problems with the back door (7 times), multiple problems with the rear air conditioner (4), with the co-pilots window (2) and had to change the transmission with 42k miles on it. It’s too bad that Ford wouldn’t back up this car on all these quality problems.

  • more "premium" than expected - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

Ive just leased an "02 Explorer (XLT, V8, leather, moonroof, 3rd row, Sport pkg.), and left the dealer less than thrilled. I was disappointed at not being able to lease a more premium suv in my business, and I settled for good old Ford. Some 200 miles later, I find myself grinning alot, driving as much as possible, and wondering "WHAT WAS I THINKING???". My new sled amounts to nothing less than a combination of performance car, tow vehicle, mini van, trail runner, and stylin cruiser. Everyone admires and respects her. I think Im falling in love.
