We have had no problems and the vehicle has been well maintained. After three years, there is minimal to almost no exterior problems. Total mileage is 33,000.

I LIVE IN THE REPAIR SHOP WITH THIS CAR! SO MANY RECALLS - PROBLEMS WITH BOTH FRONT AND REAR WIPERS, INTAKE VALVE, LEAKING ROOF, ALTERNATOR, TIRES AND JUST POOR PERFORMANCE. THE DEALER IS NEVER A HELP AND IT USUALLY TAKES 3- 4 VISITS TO GET A PROBLEM RESOLVED. CANT WAIT TILL I CAN TRADE IT IN FOR A TOYOTA!

  • Fun to drive! - 1999 Ford Explorer

I just bought it this year new. It had 74,000 miles on it. I now have about 96,000 miles on it. About 5,000 miles ago I had to have the transmission rebuilt because of the value bodies in the trans were failing. I am glad I took out the extended warr. they covered the rebuild except for the $100 deductable. If I hadnt had the warr. it would have cost me $3200. Other than the transmission the SUV has been great. I have loved driving it since I got in it in January. It has been reliable. Even when it was having tans problems, it was still going and going.

This was my first ford explorer. It was great for a while and then problems with the electrical and suspension started around 45k miles. The impression I got from several ford dealers was I should just expect these type of problems and the associated cost. Afer 18 months of this I decided to trade the eddie bauer in and pick up a used 4 runner (its great). Beware of the lousy resale on the explorer.

I have owned a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT for 18 years and I must share with you that I have never been on the side of the road with engine problems. This was my "dream" car at the time of purchase and it NEVER disappointed me, through travel, family and regular use for work transportation, (including big dogs, kids, moving & craft shows). We have traveled across the United States during the extreme heat of summer and used the air and no worries! I have always purchased the best tires and was taught at an early age after getting my drivers license that maintenance is KEY to a healthy car. I treated it well with auto checks regularly and in return my car performed well and still does. Now that it is older, my maintenance costs remain low because the only thing I have to fix is from natural wear, like brakes, belts, filters etc. My leather seats held up well with the exception of my seat , which got the most use. I just really wanted to share how happy I have been for the past 18 years with this vehicle!

  • Good SUV short on "Quality is Job 1" - 1999 Ford Explorer

The vehicle was bought new, for the end of model year vehicle. There are some rust under the car, nothing major but annoying. The dealer wont fix under warranty since it "did not rust through" as require under the warranty criteria for repair. I order the rustproof paint through internet and took care the rust myself. The vehicle got some rattle once in a while; the dealership has been very good at fixing these "recurring" issues. The dealership service has been OK – The dealer does not know what tires are qualify under the Firestone tire replacement campaign; I know more about this issue then the dealership by simply go to the information from Fords company website.

This vehicle is impressive. It is comfortable and handles like a pro in bad Colorado weather. It does seem a little top heavy and drives like a "truck", but this isnt terribly annoying since I indeed purchased a utility vehicle. The Firestone issue makes me leary, but I think overall it was blown out of proportion. Highly recommended.
