Overview & Reviews
The 1998 Ford Explorer gets a restyled tailgate.
- The Explorer is the best selling sport-ute on the market for a reason. A comfortable interior, three engine choices, and multiple trim levels mean that there is an Explorer for nearly any budget or lifestyle.
- Abysmal gas mileage. Handling is sloppy in corners.

sad to sell - 1998 Ford Explorer
By mary fullerton - March 2 - 2:00 amI have had this vehicle since its birth and am sad to sell it as it has NEVER left me stranded- and has done very well in 2 small accidents. The tures ROCK, and I love the steering controls for heat, cruise, tunes. I have a bunch of kids and moved into a Toyota Sequoia. I only hate that they dont hold their value due to so many program cars!

Hits where it hurts - 1998 Ford Explorer
By Dave H - February 26 - 2:00 amPurchased for way below book and made up the difference in repairs. Power steering, torshion bars, shocks, ignition and ABS all repaired in 14 months. Every 3 months I was in getting something else fixed. $2000 out the window. Anyone want to buy a Ford?

Does A Lot Of Things Well - 1998 Ford Explorer
By Dave Madrid - February 23 - 2:00 amAlthough my Explorer has had minor powertrain repairs, they occurred during the 6y/75K extended warranty. My other complaint is the drivers side seat recliner lever which was placed in a terrible location. It has broken off since every time you exit the vehicle, you hit the lever with your left leg. Other than the lever, I love my Explorer because it still does a lot of things well.

Explorer XLT - 1998 Ford Explorer
By bikerbill61 - February 13 - 2:00 amWhen Ford built this Explorer XLT, I think someone must of thinking of excellent. They have done a great job on this truck. I have owned other SUVs and this one has to be the best so far. The only bad thing I have had happen is now I have to buy a trailer to carry things, since that "COMPANY" has us Explorer owners as being "bad risk". My XLT has all the features of the Eddie Bauer for a few $$$$ less. Which I like.

my great exxxplorer toy - 1998 Ford Explorer
By kbrant64 - February 10 - 2:00 amthis is my first suv and i love it!!!i would like to have a new 2004 but i dont like the new front end style.as for my performance on my 98 i am in love with the power take off from dead start.the 4.0 sohc could benefit from after market acc. but that will be done later.the comfort, style and fuel economy is really good 330 miles per tank,my 99 taurus got the same mileage.the dealer i purchased from was excellant, the salesman delivered it to my home and took my trade in back to the dealer.as for handling of this suv, after you learn its traits this pup can handle anything you give it.my suv is totally stock.

Ford Explorer - 1998 Ford Explorer
By Rich Hermanson - February 3 - 2:00 amI have owned two Ford Explorers, I survived a head on accident in my first Explorer (the occupants of the other vehicle were all killed) and would strongly recomend them based on safety alone.

Must be mechanically inclined - 1998 Ford Explorer
By girlpower2004 - January 26 - 2:00 amI purchased my Ford Explorer brand new and it had at least 5 recalls. The most significant would be the tires. I had very serious engine problems and Ford had to replace my engine twice.

will never - 1998 Ford Explorer
By kiiknzonka - January 19 - 2:00 am10K in repairs in 3 years. Seriously not kidding here. A drivers seat that breaks off the floor mount bracket and falls back, numerous ball joint, pinion seal, bearing replacements, seal leaks, differential leaks, drive train replacement, a radio that has a mind of its own (which means it usually doesnt work, LED that petered out at year 2, high pitch squeeling from the rear passenger seat heater fan, and the list does go on further. My last vehicle was a Toyota pick-up that I owned for 16 years. In that time, I changed tires twice, installed a new set of brakes, and changed the oil regularly.
