Overview & Reviews
The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.
- Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
- Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

Nice SUV, poor transmission - 2002 Ford Explorer
By WRH - August 3 - 3:40 pmMy second Explorer and my second bout with a poorly designed transmission. I like everything else about the vehicle, plenty of power, great auto 4WD system, comfortable, solid, tight, great in snow, and with the 3rd row seat, lots of room for our 4 teenagers. Rear axle seal needed replacement at 75K miles (minor expense) and rear wheel bearing needed replaced at 80K miles (major expense). I attribute these faults to the SUVs first year spent as a rental car.

Luving it.. - 2002 Ford Explorer
By Icefan - July 16 - 10:00 amVery happy with my 2002 1/2 Explorer. The exterior design is very sharp, and the interior extremly well thought out. Abundant cup holders, two power points, big center console. Third seat is comfortable and useful. Vehicle defect free with 1500 miles on it. The automatic four wheel drive system kicks in immediately when needed, tested it off-road and it worked great. A very good vehicle IMHO!

Traded In 1998 for 2002 - 2002 Ford Explorer
By limbert08 - March 25 - 10:00 amThe 2002 explorer is a significant upgrade to my old 1998 XLT. It almost feels like 2 different vehicles, the 02 has great handling and quieter engine. I got a used 2002 with 18,000 miles on it for less than $20,000. I think it was a fair deal

Very Disapointed - 2002 Ford Explorer
By Disapointed Ford Fan - January 17 - 10:00 amIm very disapointed in what the Ford engineers did to an awesome SUV. This is my third Ford SUV. They ruined the Explorer. It has car mirrors instead of truck mirrors. HELLO! IT IS A TRUCK, IT SHOULD HAVE TRUCK MIRRORS! Now in order to sit up high, you have to raise the seat all the way up, but then the rear view mirror gets in the way. I now HAVE to drive the recommended speed limit on a clover leaf. If I dont, I can feel the SUV lose traction. Teach people who are used to driving corvettes how to drive an SUV instead of giving a knee jerk reaction to the bad roll over publicity!!! People who knew how to drive trucks & SUVs werent the ones rolling it!

By wesleyd - August 23 - 1:06 amBought our v8 Eddie Bauer Explorer about 3 months ago - just coming up on 3,000 miles - We love it - great handling for an suv, especially considering that my previous vehicle was a saab 9-3. Holds lots, rides well

2002 Ford Explorer - 2002 Ford Explorer
By john - July 18 - 10:23 amWe owned several Explorers before the 2002 but this was by far the best handling and with the small V-8 had all the power we needed. The V-8 was less noisy than the high revving V-6 and was not much worse for mileage. The Explorer has plenty of headroom and the interior design is very user friendly.

I Like It - 2002 Ford Explorer
By ralo - June 29 - 2:00 amThis is my first Suv and I really, really like it. It doesnt drive like your typical SUV because of the suspension. Combine that with all the other features and Id recommend an Explorer to anyone looking for a fun, reliable SUV.
