The 1998 Ford Explorer gets a restyled tailgate.

  • Great for beginners - 1998 Ford Explorer

I bought this car for myself and handed it over to my teenage daughter for her first car. We have had very little problems with the vehicle. She drives it all over to softball games. I would definitely buy another one.

  • Still going strong - 1998 Ford Explorer

Bought it 67 months ago. No major problems. The radio was replaced, but nothing else. As long as you maintain it, expect no problems. Wish it was worth something for trade in. Will probably give it to family instead of trading it for peanuts!

  • Dont rollover - 1998 Ford Explorer

While we have had no major problems with our Explorer, I am too concerned about the rollover issue and will not replace this vehicle with another Explorer.

  • Well it,s a Ford! - 1998 Ford Explorer

I hated Ford since the purchase date because they promised repainting due to "acid rain issue" but never followed through. Overall my XL served well but no options causes a quick lack of interest. Choose wisely.

  • Best 2-door sport out there! - 1998 Ford Explorer

I have loved my 98 Explorer Sport ever since we bought it in 2001 used. The biggest problem weve had with ours is the passenger lock sometimes has trouble coming up and down, but thats IT! It handles great and the gas mileage is great. Haha, you few down there complaining about the gas, try getting a V8 AWD Explorer than complain, the gas mileage comparison is GREAT! Its a nice V6, lots of power, 10 no doubt!

  • Another solid Ford truck - 1998 Ford Explorer

Bought used with 89K, Have fixed only minor issues. 4.0 OHV is slightly lacking on steep highway grades, but very reliable, and reasonably efficient for a vehicle this heavy. 5SP auto transmission is still smooth at over 100K mi. The cargo space is great, and the seats are comfortable on long trips. Auto 4x4 lets the truck claw its way around in wet/snowy weather, even off-roading Ive rarely needed 4HI/4LO. Hasnt let me down yet! My only complaints: - Rides like a truck, go figure. - Water collects in the roof channels during rain, then spills over the windshield when you first move the truck. - Tinted rear window scratches easily.

  • The Little Stuff - 1998 Ford Explorer
    By -

2nd Explorer to have the rear wiper die, moldings loosen, CD player and disc changer blink at 50k. Ford says, "it is no longer under warranty". Shouldnt a stock stereo not start to loose its lighted display at 30k? Dealer couldnt fix it without "sending it out" for a month and charging me. Shouldnt it be fixed, warranty or no warranty? No, go spend $300 at local Ford authorized service center to fix the player if you want it fast. I was told there it is a "common" problem. If so, recall the darn things! The rear wiper is just a joke. Nothing else needs to be said.

  • Nice SUV - Needs some improvement - 1998 Ford Explorer
    By -

My two biggest complaints is the fuel economy (typical of all SUVs, and some mechanical issues. I do allot of driving, however I wish there was a diesel model available! Regarding the maintenance. Absolutely get an extended service plan. It is worth every penny. My Explorer has 50,000 miles on it...and approximately $2,000 worth of mechanical issues have had to be contended with. Maintenance is to be expected from a used car. However, I am thankful that the repairs have been on their dime and not mine. Buy this car if you can get all the maintnence records to ensure that the major stuff has been repaired or get an extended service plan.

  • they roll way to quick - 1998 Ford Explorer

driving my explorer down the road at 45 MPH we started spinning as soon as we hit the grass we fliped. My seat Belt did NOT lock up. It was great un till the end. we now have a lexus rx300 that is a lot less expensive from problems in the explorer. 35000 for the explorer 12000 in the shop toatal 42000. 37000 rx300 2500 in the shop

  • Not worth the high sticker price - 1998 Ford Explorer
    By -

Have had alot of minor problems overs the years, especially the wheel area. Have problems with tire inside/outside tire wear. Have had two alignments, shocks all the way around, problems with led on radio/CD player, etc... Not too bad I guess, considering the amount of miles driven. But it nickles & dimes you. Probably the worst Ford Ive ever owned. Miss my SHO!
