Overview & Reviews
The 1998 Ford Explorer gets a restyled tailgate.
- The Explorer is the best selling sport-ute on the market for a reason. A comfortable interior, three engine choices, and multiple trim levels mean that there is an Explorer for nearly any budget or lifestyle.
- Abysmal gas mileage. Handling is sloppy in corners.

Great Vehicle - 1998 Ford Explorer
By JRR - June 9 - 2:18 pmI was very hesitant buying an American made vehicle, but the Explorer has proven to be very reliable. It rides and handles decently for a truck-based vehicle, and is very quiet on the road.

Sweet SUV - 1998 Ford Explorer
By Pencil - June 6 - 2:00 amMy Eddie Bauer is sweet, great looks, great performance. Im 18 so I do a little street racing, my 2 ton+ SUV can move from 0-60 in 7.5 seconds (K&N intake and Superchip of course with no spare tire). I beat a 5.2L Cherokee with my 4.0L Eddie and a V6 Camry w/ exhaust. Top speed is 115mph (scary as hell). I rolled my Eddie once when racing and honestly it saved my life (wearing a seatbelt) and it didnt cost too much to repair. So far no major problems mechanically, it has started everytime. The exterior is killer, two tone paint only avaliable on Eddie Bauers looks better than any other model. Overall I recommend this vehicle

The original and maybe the best - 1998 Ford Explorer
By Wiredpair - May 9 - 7:22 pmPurchased my XLT AWD Explorer last year and so far, no complaints. The 5.0L 302CID is a tried and true motor and it doesnt disappoint here. Ive found it be very responsive when needed and it certainly outperformed my 96 Grand Cherokee with 4.0 I-6 engine. The AWD drive system is engaged at all times and if you have previously driven rear drive vehicles, youll notice this but quickly get used to it. The ride quality is smooth for a SUV and it also handles pretty well for a SUV. Styling is superior to the current styling IMHO, especially the chrome grille and bumpers. Fuel efficiency is as expected, I get around 19-20 MPG on the highway. Id recommend this SVU if you are in the market.

Great car, would definitely buy again - 1998 Ford Explorer
By JBoge - May 5 - 11:31 pmI purchased my Explorer Sport new and currently have 172,500 miles and counting. It has been a great car and virtually maintenance free. After 160,miles, I had to replace the brakes, front shocks and ball joints. Changed the shift motor twice and I have some rust on the rear bumper and running boards. Other than that, it is as good as the day I bought it.

Watch Out For The SOHC V-6 - 1998 Ford Explorer
By Cibs - April 21 - 8:23 pmBought my Explorer used with 70k miles on it and thought what a great deal I got until I found out that FORD has had problems with the SOHC V-6. It seems so much that FORD upped the warranty to 6 years and 72k miles and unfortunately I am just over the miles and years for the warranty. The problems are with the intake gasket and the cam chain tensioners so look out if your Explorer is a 1997 to 1999 with the 4.0L SOHC V-6. Love this truck for everything else.

By MaryRW - April 7 - 5:24 pmI like the Explorer and find it very comfortable and useful for hauling things around. However, it uses massive amounts of gas.

NO CONFIDENCE - 1998 Ford Explorer
By BIGREDSPENDER - March 25 - 10:00 amEver since the rollover controversy during which I watched Jack Nasser appear before Congress on CSPAN, I have had a dreaded fear of rolling over while driving my Ford Explorer. Other than that, it has been reliable. One time it died at the mall. The radio has been replaced. So has the torque converter and the vapor management valve. The front seats are confortable, but the rear seat is crowded for my wife (53").

3rd Explorer Happy Owner - 1998 Ford Explorer
By rcohan - January 13 - 10:00 amThis is my third and most favorite Explorer. Unless youre towing boats, the V6 vs the V8 is definitely the way to go, especially since the horsepower and torque of each are so close. I hear alot about the ride being trucky but even without bucket seats (which I had in the last two Explorers) I have found the ride to be very comfortable. Thus far I have six years of outstanding reliable driving - not a single extra trip to the Dealer, beyond the replacement of defective Goodyear tires!
