This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's full-size SUV sports changes inside and out. Outside, the Expedition looks bigger and bolder. Some of its new styling cues, such as the egg-crate grille and raised hood, are from its little brother, the Explorer. Inside you'll find fold-flat second- and third-row seats, with a power-folding option for the third row. The second row is split-40/20/40 enabling the middle section to slide forward. The Eddie Bauer package has an in-dash six-disc changer (optional on the XLT) and steering wheel-mounted stereo and climate controls, as well as an optional DVD player, navigation system and heated-cooled seats.

But the big changes are the ones you can't readily see. Underneath the skin a double-wishbone independent rear suspension system and a rack and pinion steering configuration improve road handling. AdvanceTrac stability control, along with ControlTrac four-wheel-drive system and an increased width of 1.7 inches should help keep the rubber down and the shiny side up.

Pros:
  • Excellent interior design and comfort, wide-ranging versatility, impressive hauling capabilities, improved handling abilities, great crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Slow when loaded down, drives as big as it looks, stability control only available on high-line models.

Im glad I bought domestic this time, couldnt be happier! Fit and finish are great, as is reliability. Milage is what I expected from any suv this size. The ride is as quiet and controlled as any car. No need to by imports anymore!

  • SUV that rides like a sports car - 2003 Ford Expedition

I get a smile everytime I get behind the wheel. A very fun vehicle to drive. Best of both worlds (SUV/Sports car handling). Simple inside, but truly nice. Comfort room is outstanding. For the price verses other full size SUVs you cant go wrong. Well worth every dollar.

Traded 00(4x4,sport,fully ldd) for 03 (2wd,AdvTrc,DVD,climseats,safcanopy,tir epres,pwr3rd). Ride handling ovrall noise much improved. But less room frt&bk, worse pwrseat controls, still no pwr reclin & ergonomcly incorr bk seat handles for pulling seats up. Ctr console stor slots, dash cuphldrs & cargo net anchors removed. Ovrall Ford created attractive pkg but as usual cant seem to get details right. For $40K+ car safety options should be std or at lst easy to find, but near impossbl. GM&Toyota SUVs better ovrall design IMO & qlty/reliablty as witnessed by issues posted in Edmunds. Would not buy this car if not for rebate but glad I did anyway.

  • Airbags were the best - 2003 Ford Expedition
    By -

I only owned it a month before it was totaled by a head on collision. We were stopped and the air bags deployed and saved us after God. Prior to that it was enjoyable to drive. I owned a 1999 and enjoyed it also, but the 2003 was the best. It was a real pleasure to drive. As soon as the insurance settles, I will own another.

  • A nice BIG family vehile - 2003 Ford Expedition

I bought the Expedition instead of the Explorer is head room and size. The Explorer does not have adequate headroom for this 64" dad. I found decent deal on a used 03, but it has the 4.6 liter V8. I test drove the 5.4 liter and couldnt tell a big difference in power, however the 5.4 was new and not broken it yet. Otherwise, I really enjoy driving this vehicle. To me it doesnt feel as big and heavy as it really is. I took some pretty swift turns in a parking lot and it really hangs in there with bit of over-steer. The confident feel of the vehicle is what sold me in the first place...plus its HUGE. I like that.

  • Vibrations - 2003 Ford Expedition

I took this vehcle to the dealer on July 7, 2003 for vibrations at 45 to 50 mph. They checked front end alignment, tire balance, replaced rear end, drive shaft, u-joints and engine and the vehicle still has the vibrations. Ford has offered to replace the vehicle with a like model and forgive the mileage. I have submitted a request for arbitration under the Lemon Law. I have found that Customer Service from the corporate office, customer service and local dealer to be disgustingly indifferent.

  • 2003 XLT Popular 5.4L - 2003 Ford Expedition
    By -

Very positive impression so far. Fit and finish are quite good and we have had zero defects. The rack and pinion steering coupled with firm springs translates into precise steering with minimal body lean in turns. Ride is firm but not harsh. We have 5.4L engine - this engine pulls smoothly from low RPM. Not a lot of throttle is needed to pull away from stop signs. The transmission shifts smoothly. The interior is, as expected for a vehicle of this size, very roomy. Lots of pockets & storage. 3rd row seats are comfortable and can hold adults for long trips. Folding 3rd row quite handy.
