This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's full-size SUV sports changes inside and out. Outside, the Expedition looks bigger and bolder. Some of its new styling cues, such as the egg-crate grille and raised hood, are from its little brother, the Explorer. Inside you'll find fold-flat second- and third-row seats, with a power-folding option for the third row. The second row is split-40/20/40 enabling the middle section to slide forward. The Eddie Bauer package has an in-dash six-disc changer (optional on the XLT) and steering wheel-mounted stereo and climate controls, as well as an optional DVD player, navigation system and heated-cooled seats.

But the big changes are the ones you can't readily see. Underneath the skin a double-wishbone independent rear suspension system and a rack and pinion steering configuration improve road handling. AdvanceTrac stability control, along with ControlTrac four-wheel-drive system and an increased width of 1.7 inches should help keep the rubber down and the shiny side up.

Pros:
  • Excellent interior design and comfort, wide-ranging versatility, impressive hauling capabilities, improved handling abilities, great crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Slow when loaded down, drives as big as it looks, stability control only available on high-line models.

The 03 Expedition is a nice vehicle, overall. The independant rear suspension allows it to ride like a large car and is excellent off road. It is smooth and reasonably quiet. The 4X4 system, when working right, is also very good. I have had mine in the shop for 4X4 problems over 6 times and it is still not fixed. The interior is well thought out and is pleasing to eyes. The towing ability is great and my confidence is high with the large brakes, the brakes are excellent! When it is behaving, I love this truck.

The new design is top notch, congrats Ford. I have been towing a 6000 lb boat each weekend this Summer of 400+ miles (10.5 MPG). Plenty of power, new independent suspension is awesome, rear axle sways (&bounces) when towing - expected though since it is no longer a solid axle. Hiway MPG avg is 19. Turning radius is better then previous years. The lower center of gravity is noticable when cornering. It looks like we are going to keep this one for awhile.

This is our second Expedition. The 97 went 51K flawless miles. I hated to trade it in until I drove the 2003. It has great power (5.4L), super comfort and capacity and great workmanship. Safety improvements alone justified the switch (Advancetrac, side curtains, side airbags, radar backup). Consumer Reports rendered itself obsolete with its biased review. The supposedly top- rated Honda Pilot is nowhere in this league or class.

I purchased the new 2003 Eddie Bauer Expedition and am very impressed with it. It handles great, has a lot of room, all the “toys” work well, it is fun to drive, comfortable, quiet ride and looks great. So far I would consider this vehicle the best I have ever purchased (and I have had more than my share of them).

We conducted extensive research and fell in love with this vehicle -- then we brought it home. The dealer installed DVD system fell out of the ceiling after two repair attempts. The next week the interior flooded due to a defective AC drain hose, and this weekend it wouldnt start - totally dead. We went to pick it up tonight, and now the power seats are not working. The cigarette lighter stopped powering our cell phone, and the preset buttons are not functioning. And,the windshield antenna wont pick up any radio stations unless youre in the middle of a metro area. Weve had this SUV six weeks, but the dealer has had it more often than we have.

Previously had a 2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer, until I was hit by an uninsured driver. I was forced off the road and crashed into a concrete overpass at an estimated 67 MPH. The highway patrol officer said that if I had been driving a Camry or Accord, the accident would have been fatal. I truly believe that the truck saved my life. If youre looking for a SAFE vehicle, look no further. With the SafetyCanopy side curtain airbag system and the Personal Safety System, you cant go wrong!

We were going to buy the BMX X5 but, why spend 50k when when you can get so much more vehicle less money? I get more head turns in my Silver Birch Expedition than I would have in a "soccer mom" X5.
