  • The Best Piece of Crap Ever - 1992 Dodge Spirit

Drove the hell out of this car (I got it when I was 16, now Im 23). Gone 120 on the highway, hill hopping, off roading, trash can bowling, and even hit a deer going at a decent speed. Took out a mailbox going 45 and only left a small indent in the bummer. Spend my late teens burning out a lot. The tranny has held together like a champ, I do rust through tail pipes once every 1.5 years though. You do have to watch the oil closely this thing Burns oil like it is gas. Got it at 150,000 miles and drove for another 60k. This glorious dump just keeps running. If you are looking for a cheap beater get a v6 model with low miles and then get on down the road, you wont regret it.

I drove my Spirit 100K in a little over three years. Very dependable and reasonably thrifty. V6 was peppy but limited by transmission and suspension. Interior was OK, seats left much to be desired for both comfort and support. Needs cam belts every 60 K or so and water pumps about the same time - water pump is cam belt driven. Had the famous Chrysler paint flakin problem when driven to Goodwill.

I too purchased this car new. Back in 1990 there wasnt much to choose from for that price with a 6 cylinder. It was well taken care of & garaged but had too many problems. The engine was pulled to replace a freeze plug, transmission was weak from day one, ignition tumbler broke (had to be towed) the battery imploded (towed again), head gasket went, high beams failed, radio worked intermittently, heater stop working, finally the main seal and cam seal went at the same time. The body is still perfect and it has the original exhaust system. This car has 121000 miles.

I have had my spirit for over 2 years now. It has been extremely reliable and ive had only minor problems. Now my car has 136000 miles on it and its still going. It may not be the best looking car, but if your looking for reliability , you cant go wrong with this one. I also just bought another spirit 93 with 73508 miles. I know ill get at least 150k out of it.

  • Nice car -- bad trans. - 1994 Dodge Spirit
    By -

The spirit is a generally reliable car, with good V6 power, decent interior comfort, and a smooth ride. The only problem I have with it is the 4 speed automatic. The unit in mine died two weeks after purchase, throwing itself into safety mode in which it will only go forward in second gear. Even after a $1200 rebuild and about 18 months, it still doesnt feel like it works correctly, occasionally searching for gears while attempting to downshift or slamming itself into first gear.

The dodge spirit is a nice family car. The seats are not comfortable for long trips. But gas wise this car uses very little gas. The paint jobs on these cars are not very good. And when exposed to the sun it will fall of . I suggest having it painted with spf 15 paint. But overall I think it is a relibal econmical car. My ratting is a 7.2
