It just wont die - 1996 Dodge Neon
By Afterthought - January 5 - 3:04 pmI got this car 9 years ago with 25k on it. Sure Ive replaced tons of parts (head gasket, alternator, water pump, but not a signle front end part)but Im not too nice to a car. Decided 2 years ago Id run it until it died because its worthless to sell, but the damn thing just wont die. Dents all over, door panel coming off, blown rear strut, but still the thing gets me wherever Im going reliably and handles the winter better than a 4x4 (and does nice e-brake slides). Im gonna miss her when shes retired this month, like the really sweet ugly girl you dated that you dont want to admit to.

Dont let looks fool you - 1996 Dodge Neon
By Dont let LOOKS fool - April 10 - 1:55 amBought used in 2000 and got rid of in 03.<(which is the best thing Ive ever done!) Bought to replace my aging 89 Corsica that I loved till the major breakdowns. Obviously, this car wasnt much better. Tons of problems. Was in the shop more than on the road. Oxygen sensor, battery, alternator just a few of the problems I had w/ it out of many. HIt 2 different deer w/ it and 2 different times. Had 3 different accidents w/ it w/ other vehicles. I think red is a magnet for things to want to attract too. That or bad luck, not sure which? Who knows, but it was always something going wrong. One good thing is that just going to/from work it got good mileage 28/39! Looks are deceiving.....

ehh. - 1996 Dodge Neon
By diggit616 - June 26 - 2:00 amThis has not been my favorite car but it has done exactly what I needed it to do. No more, no less. It has had its share of problems though. Drivers window has never worked right, HEAD GASKET, A/C, radio, left blinker turns on when you brake, wears front tires uneven, door panel broke,... At this point I am just glad it still starts and that is one thing it has always done, start. It may not be the best car I have ever had but it gets me to where I need to go. Great car for new drivers and collage kids. Just dont fool yourself into thinking you wont have any problems with it. Neon quality is an extinct dinosaur.

neon is nothing special - 1996 Dodge Neon
By danda - May 2 - 2:00 amFor a long time it was a great car. It is still pretty reliable. My problems are with the paint, and the durability of the accessories. The door panels keep falling off and breaking. The windows havent worked right for a long time, The antenna fell off. The gas tank door broke one day. The car is horrible in the snow. Its a reliable vehicle. The gas mileage has decreased, but it still gets 25-32 mpg.

nice to drive, but relability problems - 1996 Dodge Neon
By cbeck - December 11 - 2:00 amBought with 102000 miles. Fun to drive. handles nice. Not too bad power wise for a small car. Timing belt broke with a 142000 miles. Bent up all the valves in the head. Facing expensive repairs. Had constant oil leaks from engine. Transmission speed sensor went bad. Trunk lock doesnt work. Ac quit working. Car seemed to self destruct at about 140,000.

Complete Lemon - 1996 Dodge Neon
By preevyet - August 23 - 2:00 amHave had an oil leak problem fixed 3 times, but of course not the same problem. Still leaks, have learned to just put oil into it occassionally, cheaper than a third repair. Too much invested to sell, will keep until it completely dies (which should be soon). Also had the timing belt go out, power steering pump die, turn signal fail now twice. O2 Sensor has failed a third time, for a total repairs cost over 5 years of about $1,400.

Should have been Recalled - 1996 Dodge Neon
By feqmxa - August 8 - 2:00 amBought it new. Had $8500 of body damage 2 weeks after I bought it. Insurance fixed it(should have totalled it). Head cover gasket started leaking oil around 65000 miles. Had it replaced at $600. Started leaking again around 80000 miles. Then head gasket blew. Donated it to charity.

Too much to fix - 1996 Dodge Neon
By Dorothy - July 19 - 2:00 amI would not buy this car unless you have money to keep fixing it. The head gasket will obviously go at multiple points, and then everything else under the hood will go as well.

3 more days and its gone! - 1996 Dodge Neon
By bilahn - July 19 - 2:00 amI have had many of the problems stated by the others, the worst of which was a catastrophic oil leak that cost $900 and 3 trips. Now they tell me theres a "miniscule" radiator hole. Plus, the car shakes and vibrates all the time! I wish I hadnt fallend for the hype back in 1996. Rotten car.

I agree! - 1996 Dodge Neon
By Chandra - July 17 - 2:00 amI bought my Neon new and have tried to keep up with regular maintenance. At this point, I have replaced all of the engine gaskets and transmission gaskets because they were made of plastic and sprung leaks starting while the car was under warranty, the radiator broke (made of plastic, too!), and a number of other repairs that seem surprising for this car have been made. On top of that, the car gets dented if you look at it wrong. Luckily, I have not had the paint problems others have complained about.
