Like its sibling, the Dakota, the Durango gets a new trim level dubbed SXT that serves as the entry-level Durango. Other improvements this year include side-curtain airbags, a five-speed automatic gearbox and an optional DVD video entertainment system.
- Commodious cabin, newly optional side-curtain airbags and DVD video, capable performance on-road and off, aggressive styling.
- Some cheap interior trim, high fuel consumption.

Good car, but expect major problems - 2002 Dodge Durango
By Mike Stone - April 13 - 3:28 pmI bought a brand new 2002 Dodge Durango SXT. I loved the car, I owned it for close to 8 years and just recently sold it. I pampered that car, kept the car well maintained but I still had major mechanical issues fairly early. At 66K miles the transmission went out. The Primary Control Module died a year later. The fan clutch went out 3 different times, had to replace the radiator, upper and lower radiator hose and at 180K the torque converter went out, which means the transmission was soon on its way out. I definitely did not want to waist more money into repairs so I let it go. I probably will not ever own another Chrsyler made vehicle for the rest of my life. The quality just stinks.

Great short term car - 2002 Dodge Durango
By Groot - December 22 - 11:49 pmFirst car I ever owned and I will never own another Dodge again. As I approached 100K several things started breaking (mechanical AC pump, transmission governor and governor solenoid, and now the brake interlock solenoid). The AC pump and interlock solenoid I can understand, but the powertrain warranty failed to cover an essential part of the transmission? Also the interlock solenoid can only be fixed by replacing the entire steering column as the part is NOT offered separately. Once they start to go they just go. Poorly designed and what good is a warranty that really covers next to nothing? Parts are too expensive and unreliable to make this a smart buy.

Junk - 2002 Dodge Durango
By jimtrue - September 23 - 2:00 amWhat a piece of junk! Brakes continually need replacing, A/C doesnt cool sufficently, fuel milage is abysmal. Bolt fell out of right rear leaf spring @ 5,000 mile, good thing I wasnt towing, leather seats very poor quality and starting to rip. I miss my moonroof. And, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SAM DELL DODGE!! Under investigation by NY State, biggest rip-off bunch in the area.

never again - 2002 Dodge Durango
By what was I thinking? - January 7 - 2:00 amAfter just 2 years and 34,000 miles, Im told that my Durango needs $3800 worth of essential repairs, including suspension. Excuse me, but we have maintained this car as if it were one of our children and now its not safe to drive? Even the dealer said he was appalled at the problems. Never again, Chrysler!
