This Year's Model Updates:

The biggest change this year is design oriented -- the 2000 Dodge Dakota is now available with four full-size doors, and with that comes a family name: Quad Cab. A 4.7-liter V8 has been added, but the 8-foot bed is gone. You can select from five more colors as well.

Pros:
  • Four full-size doors, tons of interior room, great-looking pickup.

  • Does the job, but not the best - 2000 Dodge Dakota

Regular cab is cramped for larger drivers. If youre over 6 and/or 200lbs (Im both) its uncomfortable. Ride is nice on smoother roads, very stable at hi speed. Gets very harsh over poorly maintained roads. Handles tight for a truck, but stock braking is not good. I highly recommond upgraded pads/rotors. Fuel economy is so-so, only 1-2mpg better than a V8. V6s power is OK. Will tow anything you ask it to, and pulls hard off the line, but passing power on the highway is a bit weak. Clutch is heavy and "grabby", but strong. Seems Im one of the few Dakota owners who didnt wind up with a lemon. Rotors warped at 27k, AC relay went at 35k, AC compressor went at 55k, and thats it. 60k trouble-free miles.

  • Great Homeowners Truck - 2000 Dodge Dakota

This is a great truck for the family who has a home to maintain. With 70k miles, Ive replaced tires, front hubs and brakes, battery, and gas cap. Reliable and economical (19-22 avg. MPG). I have a bed liner and cover which have served well. The jump seats are great for young people or short trips as well as letting you lock up purchases. With the V-6 Ive never had a power problem with heavy loads. Seats are comfortable for "long trips".

  • Great Buy - 2000 Dodge Dakota

I bought this vehicle for the utility of a truck, but what I got was a vehicle that handles great and has been a great buy for the money. Outside of a recall on the ball joints, I have not had any issues at all. A highly reliable vehicle that handles/performs well and is sporty. The V6 engine has plenty of get up and go and proves to have plenty of torque with a bed full of anything. The interior is comfortable, but can feel a bit "cheap". The interior components tend to move around in the assembled condition and do not fit snugly. Also, the dash features feel hollow and do not give a robust feel. With the interior my only concern, I am quite satisfied and would buy it again anyday.

  • I Like It - 2000 Dodge Dakota

Its been a great truck. There are times where I wish I had the 4.7 instead of the 5.9, but other than that, I cant complain. The only major problem Ive had with it was the transmission went out at around 60K. I took it to Powertrain Development and they told me it was most likely not assembled correctly at the factory because of the way it failed.

  • Great Truck! - 2000 Dodge Dakota

Would by this truck again. Best review you can give.

  • My little Dakota R/T - 2000 Dodge Dakota

This is a very fun little truck to have. It is a sport truck so the ride is a little stiff but that is to be expected from a performance model. This seems to be a well built truck, I havent had a single problem with it in the little over a year that I have owned it. At this point and time the only thing that I wish was better about the truck would be better gas mileage at highway speeds, in town seems to be consistent and in my opinion not to bad for a large 5.9L V8. If Dodge would of went with 3.73 or 3.55 gears the motor would be at a much happier RPM for high way speeds.

  • Fuel Pig - 2000 Dodge Dakota

11 MPG Highway, replaced (at my cost) engine at 60000 miles, all servicing done by Dodge, as per Owners Manual. Using Dodge Syn oil. Four sets of Dodge front shocks in 70,000 Miles, spring booster overloades needed to level drooping rear end

  • Good, but not Great! - 2000 Dodge Dakota

Overall I have been happy with the vehicle. I have had one recurring problem that no one has been able to resolve. This vehicle will "bog down" and stutter, and possibly stall periodically. I believe it is a lack of fuel, but it could be an air flow problem or all 6 cyclinders amy not be firing properly. The check engine light comes every time this occurs (it has happened 15-20 times). Every time the code has been checked it indicates that the gas cap needs to be replaced because the air seal and therefore the air pressure is not being maintained properly.

  • Best truck Ive ever owned - 2000 Dodge Dakota
    By -

Bought this truck new, traded in my Mustang for it. Turns out to have been a great decision. Not an ounce of trouble so far. Worst thing Ive ever had happen is a ticking valve lifter, but that goes away in 20 seconds or so and then it just runs perfect. Runs on low octane without pinging at all, a problem Ive had with almost every other brand Ive owned. Love the V8, but it could have more HP/torque for its size, but incredibly smooth and more of an economy engine than the 360 was (I have one of those in a 1996 Ram). I dont really know what else I could want a truck to be than this one!

  • Does it all - 2000 Dodge Dakota
    By -

I am a very picky buyer- this was my 21st vehicle and my first new vehicle. Dodge was the only manufacturer that offered the combination I was looking for- a v8, stick, anti-slip transmission, great appeal, and low insurance cost. After 84000 miles, the truck hasnt lost any power, I get an honest 19 MPG average city/hwy, my insurance is $338 A YEAR, and it is quicker than the R/T, and most sports cars. I can pass other vehicles quickly while towing a 3500 lb. boat! The ride is smooth, parts are cheap ($125 for a complete DIY brake job), and it has the American resilience to rust.
