This Year's Model Updates:

The Suburban gets numerous functional enhancements for 2003. The Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system is now available on 3/4-ton models for increased maneuverability and better stability when towing, while 1/2-ton versions now offer the StabiliTrak stability control system. New power heated mirrors feature puddle lamps, in-glass turn signal indicators and a memory function, and extendable power camper mirrors are optional. The interior gets numerous upgrades that include tri-zone climate control, an enhanced driver-information center, a redesigned center console and options such as second-row captain's chairs and adjustable pedals. A revised lineup of entertainment options includes a Bose audio system as well as XM Satellite Radio and a DVD-based entertainment system. For increased safety, the Suburban now features a standard front-passenger-sensing system and dual-stage airbags.

Pros:
  • Choice of powerful V8 engines, Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system, cavernous cargo space, room for nine.
Cons:
  • Massive size can be tough in tight confines, vague steering feel, cheap interior plastics.

  • Bigger is Better - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

We just moved up from a 98 JGC because of newly planned camping trips across the US with our coleman camper. The mid-sized SUVs wed been considering nolonger fit our family and towing capacity needs. Weve only had the Suburban for 2 months, but already wonder if we could ever own anything else. Recent trip from Lansing, MI to Savannah, GA was a breeze. Worst thing about the vehicle is that everyone now wants me to drive.

The 2003 is lighter and handles a little better than the 2000. The 2003 does not get as good as milage as the 2000, in fact it is exactly 2.3 miles less per gallon than the 2000.Do not know why but I suspect it is the different transmission. Also GM has all kinds of little nickle and dime short cuts in the 2003, like no tail gate key entry, cheaper paint in the door jams, lots of little cheap cut backs that are surprising for a vehicle that has one of the most loyal customer followings.

  • Highs and Lows - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

I use the vehicle for both business and family transport (4 kids). Highs = people and gear fit nicely, ride/performance is good, fuel economy suprising Lows = build/design drivers seat has squeaked since last year (annoying), engine rattles when first started (dealer/others claim its a design problem with pistons!!! no fix short of a rebuild) Overall, I like the size and performance I just wish Ford would make one this size as GMs quality is suspect (Ive had "0" problems with 3 F150s owned)

I drive the Suburban daily! I cant imagine hauling groceries, kids, backpacks, sports equipment, etc. in anything else! In the winter, with icy roads, I feel safe and secure taking the family where ever they need to go! Great Auto!

  • Love it - hate it - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Bought the car because of what it offers -- cargo capacity with ample room left over in the trunk, which I couldnt find in other comparable vehicles. Not impressed with the quality. Have had 2 transmissions (within 20,000 miles). Still having problems. Other minor irritations exist. Its a great driving car for long drives and we have enjoyed it for that reason alone and piling up the tents, coolers, baseball gear, kids, etc. Strictly for that, I stick with the car and do like its styling. Its a macho machine. I just wish our ownership experience didnt include so many trips to the dealership!

  • Suburban, A fun ride - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

We purchased a Suburban LT recently because we needed a vehicle with towing capabilities, as well as enough room for our three kids, their friends and luggage etc. when we travel. We will be towing a 26ft travel trailer as well as occasionally a boat. We had a Chevy Venture but could not tow with it. We also wanted 4WD so that we can get to work etc. during snow as we live in the North East.

I just love the 03 Z71 exterior styling and suspension. Ride comfort is not compromised at all. Room is cavernous and the powered/heated leather seats are (driver/passenger) are a awesome. Too bad at time of purch, zero percent only avail at 24 month term.

Great SUV! If youre looking for a family vechicle and dont want to be Minivan person...this is the SUV for you...not great on gas...not bad either considering the size and the power...on long trip I average 17 mpg...naturally slightly over the posted speed, though if you stay at 65 mpg or below the consumption improves to about 20 mpg. Overall, if you undecided and want my advice...GO FOR IT!

  • Work Truck - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban
    By -

My vehicle is a work truck assigned to me by the California State Parks. As an Archaeologist, I have found that the off-road capability and passenger/cargo capabilities have made it a good vehicle. Since about 80% of my mileage is off-road, I have shredded the cheap Firestone tires, and have constant emissions problems (the air intake box is not nearly heavy duty enough). Also, the air conditioner filter is inadequate. Finally, the build quality is slightly cheap, and pieces (molding, lights, etc..)routinely fall off (the snap back on though).
