This Year's Model Updates:

The Suburban gets numerous functional enhancements for 2003. The Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system is now available on 3/4-ton models for increased maneuverability and better stability when towing, while 1/2-ton versions now offer the StabiliTrak stability control system. New power heated mirrors feature puddle lamps, in-glass turn signal indicators and a memory function, and extendable power camper mirrors are optional. The interior gets numerous upgrades that include tri-zone climate control, an enhanced driver-information center, a redesigned center console and options such as second-row captain's chairs and adjustable pedals. A revised lineup of entertainment options includes a Bose audio system as well as XM Satellite Radio and a DVD-based entertainment system. For increased safety, the Suburban now features a standard front-passenger-sensing system and dual-stage airbags.

Pros:
  • Choice of powerful V8 engines, Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system, cavernous cargo space, room for nine.
Cons:
  • Massive size can be tough in tight confines, vague steering feel, cheap interior plastics.

This is the best full size suv for your money. It is the best vehicle for long rides and can fit 8 people and all their bags and still have space to run around. Bose radio system is great.

  • Chevy = Hype - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

I have always driven Fords with very little trouble. Everyone suggested I "upgrade" to Chevrolet. After owning one I can say it will be my last. I replaced the fuel pump at 70K. At 80K the speedometer cluster quit working (very common on this vehicle). Also at 80K the transfer case went out. Should I mention the electrical problems? Power doors work intermittently, windows sometimes dont roll down. When it runs, I like it. But, it spends just as much time in the shop and for a 43K vehicle, its not worth the trouble. Im going to get rid of it and get a reliable SUV. Im convinced that Chevy is simply hype. I havent exactly been blown off of my feet.

  • Some things questionable - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

I have had the same problems as a lot of Z71 owners had, the instrument cluster is going dead, and the front suspension/shocks are brutal. I have always been a Chevy guy, especially going for the Suburban for size and comfort, but GM should know better than to compromise on this simple engineering.

I have driven Chevys all my life. But this one may send me away. Nothing but dash problem everything has to be serviced because of lights coming on even after I have it serviced. Airbag went out right after warranty. Goes into 4 wheel low by itself. Replaced Horn, entire AC. DVD player in roof causing whole roof to droop. I love my truck but it is driving me crazy with expenses and dash lights always on. I always have things flushed and take care of my vehicles. $1000 dollars for air bag replacement now is out of my budget. Can not afford to take in to figure out why it goes into 4 wheel on its own. New horn now has problems again. This is at least my 7th Chevy could be last.

  • Surprisingly Good Truck - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

After years of driving Toyota pickups and RAV-4, I was hesitant to buy a Chevy but I did because I needed the extra size. Ive got to admit - I am very surprised at the quality and reliability of this truck. I bought the truck when it was 2 years old with 30,000 miles on it. I now have over 90,000 miles on the truck and the only problems Ive had so far was the Instrument Panel ($400) and the A/C belt tensioner ($250). It has the same "tight" quality feel that I grew accustomed to as a Toyota owner. Its clear that, at least on this model, GM has finally learned its lesson and built a high-quality automobile. That was certainly not the case 15 years ago!

We buy our cars to last, not turn in every two years. I traded in my Sable and kept my wifes 94 Jeep Gran Cherokee. The Surburban is much more refined, tight, and equiped over the Jeep, not to mention over all quality and feeling of quality. The truck has run like a champ if this holds to be true we will keep it for at least 10 years. I would like better gas mileage but it is hard to complain about 18 mpg with this size vehicle.

  • Poor Reliability - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban
    By -

Z71 Ride quality is very good and the vehicle is fun to drive. However the vehicle has had numerous reliability problems at 50,000 miles. The instrument cluster has gone bad, front end is loosening up, shocks gave out, replaced side mirrors, lights, etc. Recommend selling once the warranty expires or purchasing an extended warranty. Or purchase a better engineered SUV and avoid the extended warranty and service hassles all together. Actual gas mileage is around 13 MPG on average.

  • Exhaust noises - 2003 Chevrolet Suburban
    By -

After hot engine shut down vehicle has loud and prounced bangs coming from exhaust system. During cold start up a loud and prounced poping noise is heard from the exhaust system. When vehicle is driven at highway speeds of 60 and above the droning noise in the cabin is prounced and over powering. I believe GM has a definite problem with the exhauts systems on the 2003 suburbans. There is a bulitan out concerning the poping noise. GM has a superfical fix? for it. HA? Lets hear about your experiences.
