This Year's Model Updates:

The Silverado gets a makeover this year that includes a new front fascia and revised side moldings and taillights. Top-of-the-line models get power-folding heated mirrors with puddle lamps and turn signal indicators. On the inside, the Silverado is the first full-size pickup to offer a Bose stereo system and XM Satellite Radio. The instrument panel and center console have been redesigned, and Chevrolet has added new seats, a more comprehensive driver information center and a dual-zone climate control system. For increased safety, Silverados now feature a standard front-passenger-sensing system and dual-stage airbags. On the hardware side, all 4.3-liter V6-equipped Silverados and California-emission V8s are now ULEV-certified, while electronic throttle control is now standard on all V8 engines. The Autotrac four-wheel-drive system has been modified for less intrusiveness at low speeds, and the brake system received upgrades that provide better pedal feel and improved overall performance.

Pros:
  • Roomy extended-cab models, strong V8 engines, innovative features.
Cons:
  • Cheap interior materials, questionable build quality.

  • Clunks and Knocks - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The tranmission clunks and the engine knocks but hey GM says thats normal. Im joining the class action lawsuit against GM for building these pieces of junk and then screwing their customers by telling us "its normal" and refusing to remedy the problems. They must think we all are a bunch of morons. Cherolet: "Like a Knock" "See the USA in your Clukrolet".

  • Not great, not bad - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Ive had this truck for 6 years now - 122,000 miles. Not a horrible truck but had problems right from the beginning. Interior air flow "gate" made noises when set to 100% dash flow. Clunking noises developed in steering/front suspension when turning sharp corners. Then the instrument panel gages started failing (water temp and oil pressure). Had it checked out - it was the gauges. Now getting the "wipers wont turn off" problem that GM trucks have had since 1994. Poor elec design with no desire from GM to fix. Funny that GM issued a recall for the tailgate cable but wont fix or do a recall for problems that cost real money such as these. This is probably my LAST GM product.

  • Junk! - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have owned a lot of GM products over the years, 6 Chevrolet pickups to be exact. An 81, 83, 84, 87, 95, and 98, all great trucks that took one heck of a beating from me. My seventh pickup, a 2003 Z71 is by far the cheapest made pickup I have ever seen. I cant even think about beating on it, for it wouldnt survive. I bought it with 40000 miles, it now has 66000. Ive replaced both front wheel bearings, the brakes(rear twice), transmission, two alignments, instrument panel cluster, radio, tie rods, and now it has a growling sound that drives me crazy. This will be the last GM vehicle that I will ever buy!

  • Poor quality - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

In the first 22,000 miles I had to take this truck back to the dealer 9 times. I am constantly having problems with the windshield wipers, and various squeaks and rattles from the dash. Had to have the transmission reprogramed because it was clunking, the bed repainted because it was peeling, the steering shaft fixed becuase it was knocking, and many minor repairs, like the cigarette lighter not working. However, if the truck did not have these problems I would have been very satisfied with it. But based on the experience I have had I would not get another Chevy.

  • Quality Issues Already - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I purchased an 03 Silverado 3 days ago & already its at the shop. A vacuum assist pump is continually running making a very load noise from behind the dash. The dealer says they cant do anything & that this noise annoys their mechanics also. Numerous mechanics have complained about this noise, but Chevy corporate has done nothing. Good old American engineering! It’s been 21 years since my last Chevy & the experience is starting out like the last one (bad!). Also, had a paint problem upon delivery. If Chevy keeps this up there will be many unemployed Chevy workers looking for jobs at 711.

  • Still not the perfect truck ... - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

GM still needs to work the interior better .. The floor mats that come with the truck look cheap and dont cover the space on the ground thus sand gets under the mat. The interior still has too many rattles. The interior is much improved but still see too much cheap parts. THe exterior bumpers are getting some rust spots in the inside on the bumper. The truck rolls at 5 MPH when you are not stepping on the gas.

  • They dont build em like they used to. - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

I like the truck and would be thrilled with it if the build quality and dealer/manufacturer support were improved. There is an irritating wind noise from rear side windows which GM refuses to fix. Power folding mirrors are cool, but get out of alignment frequently. Ride and handling are ok as long as you avoid rough pavement.

  • I RECOMMEND BUYING A TOYOTA - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

All was well with the truck except for the windows, the driver seat, the speakers, the console, andpaint peeling off the ashtray. I didnt have any other problems with it until I decided to do the smart care engine and transmission flush. Since then the truck leaks engine and transmission oil at about a quart a day...,DONT GET IT...,I AM STILL HAVING TO BRING MY TRUCK BACK TO TRY TO GET IT RESOLVED...,ITS BEEN VERY FUSTRATING AND TIME CONSUMING...,THIS IS DEFINITELY THE LAST TIME I BUY AMERICAN THANKS TO THE RUDENESS AND POOR ATTITUDE OF TWO DEALER-SHIPS AND THEIR POOR RELATION ETHICS

  • 4WD but only have 2WD - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

Engineers still working on this one. At about 350 miles service 4wd light comes on although truck had never been placed in 4WD. Two trip to service dept service tech gives us GM document #1243149 dated 2/14/03, that says there is no permanent fix for this problem at this time, however if you dont use the 4WD you can just unhook it. Bought truck about one month after document. Assure me it will be fixed just dont know when. Very disappointed with lack of help from dealership and Chevrolet.

  • Chevy Saddness - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

While vehicle was still in warranty I noticed that the vehicle was using oil when cranking. Dealer oil consumption tests showed the engine was using 1 to 2 quarts of oil for every 3 to 4k miles driven. Chevrolet said usage of up to 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles is within spec. They are essentially saying use of three to four quarts of oil between my normal changes is within spec. Chevrolet was not interested in any goodwill deal to repair the deficiency. After purchasing many GM vehicles over the years, I must say I am extremely dissappointed in Chevrolets lack of customer service and desire to back up their products. Thats my last Chevy.
