  • Dont buy this car - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

My Malibu is best described as the Mobile Money Pit. I keep having to invest more money into this car. It is a nightmare to own. It is an okay car when it does run properly, which is not often. Save your money and invest in a Honda or Toyota.

  • Trade it in b4 50,000 miles - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

We bought our 98 brand new. It seemed great. At 50,000 miles, a gasket leaked oil coolant into the engine and destroyed the entire engine with no warning($5,000.00). Jiffy Lube told us "Everyone knows Malibu gaskets do this after 50,000 miles." Internet sites confirmed the statement. The dealer and Chevy were very concerned and paid to replace the engine. Conscientous car builder or one who knows their product has a defect? ABS light comes on whenever it wants to, AC only works on #3. Not soured on Chevy, though. We have a 2002 Avalanche and love it to death!

  • Disappointment - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

When first purchased, the Malibu seemed to be an okay car. After 20,000 miles, the brakes went and had to be replaced. The cassette player never worked properly even after being replaced. Then for a while everything was normal, but now with 77,000 miles on the car, the ABS and brake lights have come on. I am told that the problem is in the "modulator" and will take approximately $1,000 to repair -- time to trade but never for another malibu!

  • Runs well after all those fixes.... - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

After 45,000 miles, my car has all new parts... New Hazard Light switch...replaced 3x. New Battery...replaced 2x. New Front ABS Brake...Just replaced. New Air conditioner fan switch...replaced 2x. Affinity Tires...Just replaced Squeeky Suspension...Didnt replace yet. Windshield fluid chamber keeps losing fluid. Dealer couldnt find out why. I just learned the pump has a leak...Leaked when purchased. Rear brake light lenses filled with water after most recent snow. I guess thats why the rear brake lights need to be replaced often. Replaced cigarette lighter too. Replaced the plastic molding inside the trunk just under the trunklid.

Just change oil. Never any mechanical problem. Dependable family car. It has never let me down for the past six years since I had it.

  • Brakes, front end, A/C just plain poor - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

Bought new. Price was right and seemed nice at the time, reviews were good. However, have replaced brakes too many times to count-calipers, rotors, pads- the works. A/C switch turns on-off at random fan doesnt work on 1 and 2. Control arms clunk on every bump. Bad power lock switch design. Paint scratches easily. Fit of glove box poor. Original tires were terrible.

  • Run Away!!!!!!!! - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Stay away from this one!!!!!! What is the deal with the squeak up front when driving over 35 mph? The AC switch has been replaced twice ($300/ea). The drivers side auto window will not work (Ive had this repaired twice and need to again, but at $350 a pop, who can afford it again?) Struts replaced at 60K miles $500 one month after I paid the car off, Brakes replaced twice. I currently need a whole new ABS system and will need a new steering column soon! I just hope I can get rid of it without having to pay someone to take it!

  • Please Recall for Brakes/ABS and A/C - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

I brought this car new for my wife in 1998 with V6. So far (at 103,000 miles) the engine has performed well. There are a few problems with this car: A/C switch, ABS, front brakes, alternator, squeaky noise. If not for these problems I would recommmend it. This is my second American made car and I am a little scare to buy another one.

  • Never buy this car! - 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

I have had to have every possible part on the braking system replaced. The ABS light still comes on. The car needs its 4th air conditioner control unit at 45,000. Had to put $1,700 into it in January and the car still wants to die out when started. Dealer now says it needs a fuel pressure regulator for another $200 - could this have been the problem all along? Lemon......
