  • I loved my Lumina - 1996 Chevrolet Lumina

I absolutely loved my Lumina. It was my first car, and it just recently died at a whopping total of 308,000 miles on it. I didnt have to put any work into it while I owned it except the usual oil change and whatnot. The only reason I didnt keep it was because I blew a head gasket and it would have cost me more to fix it than the car was worth, since I only paid $600 for it.

My dad bought this car for me in high school and I have had the best times in it. It has an awesome V6 engine that beats all the little Ford Escorts on the freeway. Not very pretty to look at, especially the front, but it has a nice red color that looks great in the sunlight. The only problem Id say is the rear right brake, which tends to rub against the wheel on long long road trips and cause a stink. The brakes arent as reactive as many cars, but they do work fine. The interior is hideous (the ceiling is falling in and there are many stains on the back floor), but the upside to the interior is that it is very roomy so if youre transporting tall people they can stretch out their legs.

I have had this car for 8 years now with no major failures. I get 32-34mpg on the highway and about 21-24 mpg in town. I have done regular maintenance on it and at 105,000 miles it is still going strong!

My parents bought this car in 1996 with 40000 miles on it. They gave it to me last year with 276000 miles, and still running strong. It now has 304000 and the motor is still running strong. They had to replace the altenator several times, thats about it other than regular maintenance.

  • Good, Bad and the Ugly - 1993 Chevrolet Lumina

We got this car brand new! The handling was excellent. ABS worked great the one night I needed it. We had 230K miles when it gave up the ghost. The steering wheel had a great feel. The Bad: The cloth seats wore fast. The beverage cup holder broke so often the dealership sold them at cost to me. The back seat was horrible for any body over 8 years old. Alot of wind noise. The Ugly: The 4 wheel disc brakes had a recall / class action. Spent almost $1000 on replacing front brakes every 30K miles until I spent $1200 getting the entire brake system replaced. I got $43 in the class action. The tranny went south at 200K /$900 repair. Needed a engine rebuild at 230K. Got a brand 2005 Ford Focus.

It was 10 yrs old with 93K when I bought it. It was fully loaded with an awesome GM Bose sound system. The 3.1 V6 was quick and powerful, yet with the overdrive, it got great gas mileage, 22 mpg city/38-40 hwy at 70+mph with cruise control on several long trips from Pa. to Fl. and Tx. The floating caliper was a faulty design and I had to replace the brake pads every 6 months. The r/r outer pad would be all wore out, yet the rest still looked new. Got smart and changed only the outer pad if the others had no wear. After 16 yrs, minimal body rust, but the salt did a number on the undercarriage, brake lines and any bolts. Id still be driving it, but a truck hit me and totaled it. Still ran great at 216K.

  • Great for a to b - 1999 Chevrolet Lumina

I inhearited my Lumina from my mom. She had the car since 02. Really I have seen no mechanical problems. Im a delivery driver in college and the gas mileage will suprise you. Its not flashy but it will get you from a to b pretty well. One thing I do have a problem with is there is only one cupholder. All in all if given the chance I think I might get another one

  • Great bang for the buck - 1996 Chevrolet Lumina

Have had one for ten years. Fast, good gas, reliable overall. 188,867 miles - and going. Items replaced - Water pump, Throttle sensor, rear wheel hub & anti-lock brake sensor, front linkage (rough roads.) 2 or three window motors (smoker though - window always going up and down.) Handles well, better than it feels. LS model - pretty sporty for a sedan. I drive aggresively, but the tires wear well.

  • Value Consumers Dream - 1996 Chevrolet Lumina

It amazes me when I see these below $3,000 and below 80,000 miles. I have had my Lumina for 7 years, used it all through college and after graduation. I put in oil every 3000 and gas when it goes down, and have not spent a dollar above that. Its in great shape, nothing overly-appealing about the car, but its reliable. Would highly reccomend these models, though I have heard anything above a 2000 has had some issues with quality. Perfect for a parent to buy for student.

  • Good yet bad? - 1992 Chevrolet Lumina

OK this car has been pretty good to me. I got very lucky on the whole mileage thing. The person kept it in their driveway for years. Thats where the problems started. This car wasnt used to being used every day. Very very costly for everything. Most people cant work on it without special equipment meaning you have to take it to the dealer to get anything fixed. The air alone cost me major dolars not to mention the timing belt.
