This Year's Model Updates:

GM has resurrected the Impala nameplate (a staple in Chevy's lineup from 1959 to the early '80s and then briefly from 1994 to '96 ) and put it on an all-new full-size sedan body that rides on the Lumina front-drive platform. Although the Lumina itself is back for the 2000 model year, Impala will eventually replace it as Chevy's large-car entry to battle the likes of Ford's Crown Victoria, Buick's LeSabre and Chrysler's LH cars.

Pros:
  • Six-passenger seating availability, big brakes, torquey V6 engines.
Cons:
  • So-so styling, no V8, big front-drive cars rarely sell as well as big rear-drivers.

I drive for a living to call on many accounts throughout Michigan. I drive in all weather conditions. I have been delighted with the IMPALA. I wanted a car with a comfortable ride, lots of trunk space, engine power and relability. I have only one problem and that is the steering was making a crunching sound. I have had that repaired. All is well. Sometimes the breaks "grab" and make a "jerking" motion. But most of the time there is no problem. I have ordered another one.

Nothing but problems from day one.First probems with keyless entry, receiver replaced, two computers replaced ,the dealer called GM, they told them it was the circiut board behind the instrument panel, problem solved. Next creeking noise when turning sharply to left and right. Dealer replaced steering rack, not the probem.Called GM, They told the dealer it was flex in the engine cradle. Not enough room for the rest of the problems.

Less than 10 days to lease end, and Im still thinking about buying my base Impala Sedan. No abs, but sporty 16 inch wheels in dark green make the car a looker. I can feel the ride loosening, and the tranny slipping, so I may be unloading at the right time. I did not know the engine cradle was a problem. Anyway, after 37k miles of NY metro driving, I have not replaced the tires, or brakes, just oil & the driver power window switch.

Was in an accident yesterday. 60 miles an hour hit a mini van. We did hit the brakes and skidding about 60 feet. No injuries. Great safe car in my opinion!

Excellent performance but the subcarriage had to be replaced under warranty. Some problem with the steering [??} makes a noise but was told by dealer not to worry. Now Chevy has some retrofit kit and it has been installed still some noise though.

  • UAW Labor at its best! - 2000 Chevrolet Impala

Got the Impala as Fleet with 52 miles on it, 98562 miles later the car is still as fun as day one. The steering started to make a clunk sound after 30k but a lil grease fixed it, the air vents are hard to position so that it does not blow right into the drivers face. Fuel economy is something i love, at 30 mpg it gets awesome mileage. the car doesnt make a single squeak or noise. It was a lil noisy on the road noise with the tires that come with the car from the factory, after putting Aquatreds with lower road noise it is alot quieter. This is trully Canadian UAW labor at its best! Love to drive the car.

Great road car with time-tested 3.8 V6. Actual highway mileage up to 32 MPG !!! Intuititively designed, user friendly features. Feels big and safe to drive. Especially comfortable for long drives. Good fit and finish. Best bang for the buck in a sedan for under $30,000.

THIS CAR REMINDS OF THE CORSICA THAT I PREVIOUSLY OWNED. I LIKE THE SIZE OF THE CAR. IT HANDLES THE ROAD VERY WELL. I DRIVE THE INTERSTATE EVERYDAY. WHEN GETTING ON THE ROAD, IT PICKS UP VERY WELL, EVEN THOUGH IT IS A V6. I REALLY LIKE MY CAR. I AM THINKING ABOUT TRADING IT IN FOR A NEWER MODEL. THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE THE LS MODEL.

The car has been not totally what I expected! Steering problems persist. The intermediate shaft was replaced once and now with 25000 miles it needs to be replaced again. Also the transmission was replaced after 15000 miles! If this car is so fun to drive why so many complaints regarding the steering? GM really needs to take a close look at the steering design. Probably will never buy a GM again.

Best car and best car for the money. Has all the bells and whistles of cars costing $10,000 more. Fun, fun, fun to drive. Interior is a little drab and the cruise light on the dash can be distracting at night, but this is the car. Have a ball.
