This Year's Model Updates:

GM resurrected the Impala nameplate last year (a staple in Chevy's lineup from 1959 to the early '80s and then briefly from 1994 to '96) and put it on an all-new, full-sized sedan body that rides on the Lumina front-drive platform. Although the Lumina itself is still with us for the 2001 -model-year, Impala will eventually replace it as Chevy's large-car entry to battle the likes of Ford's Crown Victoria, Buick's LeSabre and Chrysler's LH cars.

Pros:
  • Six-passenger seating availability, big brakes, torquey V6 engines.
Cons:
  • So-so styling, no V8, wallowy suspension, big front-drive cars rarely sell as well as big rear-drivers.

  • Junk - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

I bought this car because of the low gas mileage for this size car. It is a comfortable 6 passenger car. But you never know when you may have to walk. The 3.4 has defective intake gaskets which I have replaced. The signal light blinkers are defective. The brake rotors are defective. I have another problem with engine misfire now. This car is the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

  • Watch out for the tranny! - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Bought it used w/ 26K on the odometer. I do a lot of driving, now has 65K on it. Overall, its been a decent purchase considering the price (about $10K). Two major problems though. A bad fuel injector at 34K, and bad tranny at 38K. Both under warranty. Dealership was great about both repairs. Ride is a little rough if you are used to a larger sedan or wagon. Definitely not a road trip car. Front seats are a bit too contoured for my taste. Back seat has tons of space. Could easily fit 3 car seats, so dont discount it if you have kids. Huge trunk. Good fuel economy, attractive styling, better than the new ones, IMHO.

  • nice car but a rattle-trap interior - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

I really like the car except for the constant rattle in the glove box door and the unusually high road noise. You may not feel every bump in the road but you sure can hear it. The car has been this way ever since I bought it. It is great to be able to fit 2 shopping carts of food in the trunk, and another cart full in the back seat area! The stereo is nice but needs better sounding rear speakers. 24K miles later, it is showing its age as well as feeling its age. The car doesnt feel as robust as it was when new. So far no major mechanical problems!

  • Id buy another - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

The only problems with the 01 LS were related to a set of bad tires. She runs nicely, adequate power even as she approaches 100K miles. Lots of room on the interior and big trunk make it a nice family vehicle. If I were going to buy another American car, I would definitely go with another Impala.

On a trip to Florida we averaged between 32-34 mpg, which I find extremely impressive for a car of this size and considering it is a six cylinder. I really like the ride, the comfort of the interior, and the big 4 wheel disc brakes. So far after 40k Ive had no mechanical problems. The car has had some annoying quality control problems including a rattling ash tray, a defective seat track which creaked and groaned, a rear window seal which kept popping out around the edges, and roof drip rail moldings which were popping out. Since these items have been fixed, Ive had no other problems and I really enjoy the car.

  • Its a Chevy - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

I bought this car used for my wife when it had 60,000 miles on it, now has about 85K. Its been a decent car, a good road car. Had to replace spark plugs at 62K, catalytic converter at 65K (under warranty). Problems include intermittently working turn signals, squeaky suspension, motor on drivers power window switch about to go out. Steering feels too light, car doesnt feel very substantial for its size. My biggest gripe is that the car cant make it up a moderate grade without downshifting, which gets tiring on long trips. My 4 cylinder 89 Acura makes it up without so much as a hesitation.

When I first looked at it and drove it at the dealership I thought it would be perfect for my first car. Then I took it home and started driving it and find that my fuel guage doesnt work, I have a computer problem, and my sway bar is going out!

  • So So - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

My thoughts on this car after having it for 4 years is its so so. The brake/rotor system is cheesy. Maybe it was built for the Cavalier. The car is noisy on accelerating. Not inpressed with the flooring under the carpet. Theres not much pickup when entering a highway or passing. The radio antenna in the window makes for lousy reception on stations 50 miles away. The opening of the trunk for putting things in is too small.

I chose this car because I wanted a large car with a sporty ride for less than $30,000. This seemed like the best choice and it has been a fine choice. I put alot of highway miles on this car and it is an excellent vehicle for highway driving. In fact I got 50,000 miles on the original brakes which is the most I have ever gotten out of a set of brakes.

  • Another Vehicle, please! - 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Unfortunately, I wanted to trade it in for an SUV. On the contrary, I was told that the trade in value offered would cause me to add $3000 to get out of the damn car! At first, I thought I was the only person who couldnt keep my light assy clean. Much to my surprise, when I notice other Impalas going down the road, the rest of the car looks clean but that lens is always filthy! I like it for the look since I am a single female, but getting out of it is more trouble than its worth. Do me a favor Chevy, since I have owned nothing but your model vehicles for 10 years now, give me a break on the trade-in!!!!
