This Year's Model Updates:

The Impala receives significant updates for 2006. On the outside, Chevrolet has altered the Impala's styling with new headlights, taillights and wheels. The SS trim also gets a unique grille this year. Inside, the Chevy car features updated audio systems, a redesigned instrument panel, new seats, standard side curtain airbags and an available fold-flat rear seat. Mechanical changes include a stronger body structure, retuned suspension geometry for enhanced stability and improved braking systems. There are also new engines for the Impala: a base 3.5-liter V6, an upgraded 3.9-liter V6 and a new 5.3-liter V8 for the SS trim, which replaces last year's supercharged V6. Finally, the lineup of trim levels has been shuffled slightly to accommodate a new luxury-oriented LTZ trim.

Pros:
  • Six-passenger seating availability, powerful and efficient engine choices, clean interior styling, standard side curtain airbags.
Cons:
  • Soft suspension and vague steering detract from handling dynamics, SS has to put its 300 hp through the front wheels.

  • Disappointed - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

My Wife and I were first very excited to get a newer Impala ours is an 06, the fact that I was not given the vehicle history up front should have warned me off. our first problem was the trans. we lost 2nd gear, then the rotors warped at 39000 miles, then the truck started rusting out and also the passenger side front door panel started to rust. After I finally received a copy of the cars history before I bought it I was shocked there were 3 pages of repairs on the car. I am still having trouble with 1st gear shifting hard and sometimes being sluggish to shift at all, and as far as gas mileage this car has never done better than 17 mpg period.

I bought this car back in 2007. it had 21K miles on it. head gasket replaced at 24K miles on it. Master switch for window controls replaced at 28K. Intake manifold gasket replaced at 51K. The motor cuts out at 107mph. GM could have done a lot better with their vehicles. I will buy Japanese next time.

  • Just OK - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

traded a 2003 for this one, should have kept the 2003. The 2006 gas pedal pushes very hard makes your leg cramp up after a hour or so of driving. Ddealer says its in spec. Passenger seat sits forward slopeing too much, very uncomfortable.Cruise control not stable in holding set speed varies 3 to 4 mph then shifts in and out of overdrive constantly when in cruse. Engine kept dying all of the time after starts dealer says it has something to do with the E85 fuel, but has failed to fix the problem. Gas mileage could be better, 2003 impl got on average 28 to 29 mpg. 2006 gets on average 21 to 23 mpg.

  • Never again - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

I usually dont say never but in this case I will never buy another Chevy for the rest of my entire life. I have had three and the Impala SS is the worst because it cost the most. This car has 36000 miles on it and its burning oil, the plastic is shedding its skin, warped rotor on right front. Rear view mirror wont remain tight. Carpet is cheap and there is a clunk in the rear end when going over bumps. I got ripped off and I will never ever buy another hunk of junk like this. As soon as I get enough of this loan paid off its back to Japan for me. My used Dodge was better then this car was new.

  • Reliability Problems - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

I have a 2006 3.9 engine. 66,000 business miles in 2.5 years. Transmission, front end bearings, water pump, tire sensors, sway bar, all have failed. I like the car, but too many repairs. All dealership repairs. No explanation. I will never buy another Chevy. Thank God its a company car, not too much out of pocket.

  • Not that happy - 2006 Chevrolet Impala
    By -

I currently am in a 4 year lease with my Impala with 11 months to go and counting! Not happy with the fact that it needed brakes and rotors all the way around at 24000 miles. Had and entire exhaust system put in this Aug, under warranty thankfully but now the warranty is up and I am terrified that this car is going to cost me during the last year I have it. Just put a tie rod in at my own expense. Other annoying problems. Lets see, rust spot that keeps reappearing on the trunk due to screws underneath trunk molding, clunking in the back end when you go over bumps, broken sun visor, fuel pump and hoses replaced after 1st yr. Passenger seat that clunks anytime someone sits in it. No more Chevys!

  • Last Chevy - 2006 Chevrolet Impala
    By -

My Impala is a fun car to drive, but not a fun car to own. So far the tire monitor system has died twice after being repair or replaced (under warrenty). The remote start receiver has to be replaced. The steering shaft had to be repace because of looseness in the steering. The seat risers had to be replaced because the driver seat became loose. All of the repairs were done under warrenty but tire monitor system just died again and the warrenty ran out. This is going to be my last Chevy. Back to the Toyota, Honda, or Nissan. Dont like fixing and paying for a car at the same time.

  • Poor - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

This is about the 16th new chevy I have purchased and it is a piece of junk. The seat has been replaced 3 times. The hose came off the power steering. The floor mats have been replaced. The rear glass the rear defroster dont work. The glass has to be replaced. This will be my last GM car.

  • Good but not the best - 2006 Chevrolet Impala
    By -

Since I own my Impala SS, it rates high on the fun level but med on the design level. The seat risers had to be replaced, along with the steering shaft. I had computer issues the remote start, starting distance was reduced down to about 5 feet from well over a 100 feet when I first bought the car. But outside of the little minor glitches the car is really fun to drive and own. Gas miliage is no where near what it was rated. But I have learned to use cruise control more and less foot. I still love the car.

  • Hate it! - 2006 Chevrolet Impala
    By -

The only good thing is it is roomy. I have had so many problems with this car I traded in my Subaru Baja for more room but I hate the day I lost my Subie. The cloth on the seats has fuzz balls on them and they catch dirt so bad. The rotors have had trouble and it keeps a vibration that they cant keep fixed for more than a few weeks. I cant even type all the things I hate about this car. It declined in value more than any car I have ever had. I usually trade about once a year and I usually do pretty good but this is the first car I have been upside down in. I gave $17,000. For it less than a year ago and it only has 32,000 miles on it and now it only books for 9 to $10,000. Very sick over that!
