This Year's Model Updates:

The Impala receives significant updates for 2006. On the outside, Chevrolet has altered the Impala's styling with new headlights, taillights and wheels. The SS trim also gets a unique grille this year. Inside, the Chevy car features updated audio systems, a redesigned instrument panel, new seats, standard side curtain airbags and an available fold-flat rear seat. Mechanical changes include a stronger body structure, retuned suspension geometry for enhanced stability and improved braking systems. There are also new engines for the Impala: a base 3.5-liter V6, an upgraded 3.9-liter V6 and a new 5.3-liter V8 for the SS trim, which replaces last year's supercharged V6. Finally, the lineup of trim levels has been shuffled slightly to accommodate a new luxury-oriented LTZ trim.

Pros:
  • Six-passenger seating availability, powerful and efficient engine choices, clean interior styling, standard side curtain airbags.
Cons:
  • Soft suspension and vague steering detract from handling dynamics, SS has to put its 300 hp through the front wheels.

  • Disappointing SS - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

This car has all the horsepower and torque that Chevy boasts plus some. However, Im severely disappointed in the multiple problems Ive had with this car including the rack and pinion being replaced twice, steering shaft replacement, tire monitor problems and excessive oil consumption between oil changes. In my opinion, Chevy should have made this a rear wheel drive car. Being front wheel drive, it has too much torque steer. Also the brakes feel inadequate for the size and power of the car. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone. As soon as I can, I will trade it in for something other than Chevy.

Excellent vehicle. I have had it almost 2 years and have only had a couple of problems. The first was an electrical problem when the computer and vehicle would shut down. This occurred when I was around 11,000 miles. The local Chevy dealer couldnt figure the problem out. I took the car to another dealer and they replased the battery. No more electrical problems. I just passed 53,000 miles and all is good. I change the oil every 10,000 miles with Royal Purple oil and a K&N Oil filter. The only other problem is malfunctioning tire pressure sensors. They ave been replaced 3 times thus far. Its no big deal. I drive Chevys at work and they have similar issues. Otherwise, I love it!

Got my LTZ a little more than two years ago, no problems. Oil changes at dealer with 15,700 miles on car is all the service it has needed. Great power, ride, and look of the LTZ. Would be nice to have automatic climate control, and rear wheel drive. However, the price I got this LTZ with all the bells and whistles it was and still is a bargain and a great car. GM & Chevy need to keep up the work and show the American car is still king.

Comfortable on long rides. Minor things failed that detracts from an otherwise great car. I will definitely buy another one.

My Impala is a fun car to drive, but not a fun car to own. So far the tire monitor system has died twice after being repair or replaced (under warrenty). The remote start receiver has to be replaced. The steering shaft had to be repace because of looseness in the steering. The seat risers had to be replaced because the driver seat became loose. All of the repairs were done under warrenty but tire monitor system just died again and the warrenty ran out. This is going to be my last Chevy. Back to the Toyota, Honda, or Nissan. Dont like fixing and paying for a car at the same time.

After having put over 15,000mi on my 06 SS, I have a few amendments to make to my original review. The power from the Bose speakers is causing an obnoxious buzz in the sheet metal in back. The tire pressure monitoring system is hypersensitive and alerts me when the cold weather makes the air less dense. The grounding cables on that system have been replaced once and need it again. The seat pads have further compressed and become less comfortable causing me to buy a memory foam cushion and if it werent for the power and looks, I would have traded at 10,000mi. Im still impressed with the fuel economy after all these miles but I look forward to my next car which will not be a GM product

I love my Chevy. I dont know why everyone is having problems. I have a 2006 Impala and it never gave me problems. We brought it with high miles on it it is a nice luxury car without paying luxury money. I love the way it handles me

I have enjoyed everything about my new Impala. It rides smooth, accelerates when I need, and is an eye catcher. All my neighbors were impressed.

  • Dont Drive It Unless You Want To Buy It - 2006 Chevrolet Impala

This car is pretty much the whole package. It has power, looks, sophistication, and a good list of features. Gas mileage is not exactly close to what the sticker says but I am hoping that buyers would anticipate that since the gas pedal is so enticing. I strongly suggest the SS to anyone who has the need for a large car but still wants to DRIVE! I can pretty much guarantee that the power and the thrill will make up for the lack of options. Some features that arent mentioned... When you tap the blinker, it lights three times for a lane change and also, the OnStar phone voice recognition is immensely better. Depending on what you are driving now, the seats may seem flat and unsupportive.

I got my Impala in early 2006. I was stopped at red lights, car washes, and everywhere else by people complimenting my nice car. It is the best car I have ever driven. The only negative that I can report is that the tire monitoring system is extremely sensitive about the tire pressure being just right. The only option that the car doesnt have is automatic climate control. Other than that, it is the best car. When my lease is up, I plan on getting another one!
