This Year's Model Updates:

The Equinox is an all-new compact SUV from Chevrolet. It shares a platform with the Saturn Vue and offers similar levels of space and versatility for buyers seeking practical suburban transportation.

Pros:
  • Standard V6 engine, long wheelbase affords plenty of interior room, fore/aft-adjustable rear seats, available side curtain airbags.
Cons:
  • Costs as much as the more powerful Saturn Vue, limited drivetrain choices, confusing stereo controls.

I love how it looks. Its fun to drive and handles OK in the snow but not when its icy. Its too light and needs more weight. I had a minivan with AWD and it handled better because it weighed more. The seating is nice and so are the heated seats. Love them, good for long trips. Headrests are a little too big and get in your view. OK on gas at about 19 mg hwy. Problems with leaky windshield at first, then leaky moonroof. Nice to have but not worth all the hassle. Drainage problems and rot in hose for moonroof. Windshield has problems when weather is bad, unable to clear windshield without hazy streaking. Told it is an environmental problem. My 8 yr old minvan didnt have that problem. Its very problemsome.

Overall, a good experience, but wonder about build quality. Have purchased mostly foreign cars (Toyota, Honda) and wanted to go American this time. If they let me down, itll be my last. I know repairs have been a big part of the American auto profit picture, but who wants to hastle with that?

  • Great Looking, but Poor Reliability - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

My wife and I both purchased one of these in Sept. 2004. My wifes started having a thumping, grinding, vibrating noise from the rear when she would make a turn. This is quite common in many different reviews online, something in the rear differential seems to be the culprit, not to mention the brake rotors warping. Should you need to stop, leave plenty of room as they shake, vibrate, and fade. We traded one for a Certified 05 Tahoe that we paid $27K for. Great deal since a new Nox is $24K. MPG not much different either. Tahoe display shows 16.2 MPG w/ 5.3 V8. I tracked mileage per tank vs. actual file up with the Nox for the first 10K miles and only got 17MPG.

Bought the Equinox new in March 2004. We have had several mechanical & electrial issues since. Our Equinox gets about 16.5 MPG overall. We liked the design and the utility the Equinox offered. The interior materials are cheap. If we had to do it again, we would have purchased a Liberty or Vue, and lived with the smaller vehicle. We plan on trading the Equinox in due to reliabilty issues.

  • It is so-so - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

We bought the Equinox when they were hard to find. At first we loved it but then it started having problems. Within the first 2 months my front struts were replaced and now it is in the shop waiting for a part, which cannot be found right now. Also go for the leather the cloth is cheap. I do like the sunroof and we had a dvd put in and like that. My suggestion is wait for next years model so all the kinks can be worked out.

I bought this new and drive about 35000 miles a year. First 100000 miles fine. Since then, I have replaced one front wheel bearing, one of the 2 fuel pumps, brakes, the exhaust manifold. It has been a constant, very expensive headache this past year. Paint on the console has worn off. Turning radius is awful. Sell yours before you reach 100000 miles. This vehicle wont help the reputation of American car manufacturers.

  • Equinox - SO - SO - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Had the car since Oct. 04. I hate the cloth interior - everything sticks to it, and its difficult to keep clean. I cant put the dog in it, since you cant easily clean dog hairs off. Theres noise at the drivers side window, in the dashboard, and in the steering column. Ive taken it to the dealership twice and they can never hear/find it. There are blind spots because the car has high backseat headrests. There are no "grab bars" in front to help older people get in. Im ready to trade it in!
