Overview & Reviews
Though it evolved into an entirely different species, the luxury performance DNA of the Cadillac STS can be traced all the way back to the special range-topping Seville hardtop coupe of the 1950s. At that time one of the fastest, flashiest and most luxurious cars on the road, it evolved into various different forms over the course of several decades until emerging as the buttoned-down STS luxury sedan.
If you're in the market for a used luxury sedan with competitive amounts of power, roominess, comfort and value, a STS could be a good idea. However, it was largely eclipsed in terms of performance and luxury by competing Japanese and European sedans in its later years. Even its smaller CTS sibling offered better performance and handling, a much nicer interior and class-competitive interior space.
Most Recent Cadillac STS
The Cadillac STS was a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan that was produced from 2005 through 2011. A midcycle refresh took place for '08, bringing revised styling, a more luxuriously trimmed interior and a new base engine. We suggest focusing your search on cars from these later model years.
Originally, the STS came standard with a 255-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and a five-speed automatic. This was replaced by a 302-hp V6 and six-speed auto for 2008. With the exception of the STS's final model year in 2011, buyers could opt for a 320-hp 4.6-liter V8 coupled to a six-speed auto. Originally, each engine represented a different trim level, as the V8 came standard with the V6's optional heated front and rear seats, memory functions, heated steering wheel and automatic wipers. Key options to look for included a magnetically controlled adaptive suspension, adaptive cruise control, a navigation system and ventilated front seats.
For 2010 and 2011, however, trim levels were introduced. The V6 came in Luxury Sport, Luxury and Premium trims, while the V8 was available in Luxury and Performance. The actual equipment that was available didn't really change. Many of the previous options were simply redistributed into the upper trims, though it should be noted that all but the V6 Luxury trims got upgraded braking, steering and cooling systems.
In reviews and road tests, our editors found the strengths of the Cadillac STS to include surprising agility, respectable performance and a high-quality audio system. Downsides include a somewhat old-fashioned feel compared to its rivals, a small trunk and hit-or-miss interior quality. Overall, it's hard to fully endorse this full-size luxury sedan when Cadillac's own smaller CTS from the time offered a more involving drive while only giving up a bit of interior space to its big brother.
Previous Cadillac STS Models
Used shoppers may come across an older STS. Technically a trim level (there was also an SLS), this is actually the front-wheel-drive, fifth-generation Seville produced from 1998-2003. The STS was the "performance-oriented version" of that car and featured a more powerful V8 engine along with more luxury features. The 1992-'97 Seville also featured a similar STS edition.

2005 Cadillac STS - 2005 Cadillac STS
By gordon petry - August 30 - 4:35 pmWe have had our 2005 Cadillac STS for less than two months but so far really love it except for the small glove box. This is our fourth one and we really love it. We had some problems with the carpet but my dealer and Cadillac renewed it. We hope to buy another one in a couple of years.

Happy choice to replace Acura TLs - 2005 Cadillac STS
By w.j.bridges - August 20 - 2:29 pmThe Cadillac STS is a great road car. Fuel mileage (overall) 21 mpg but engine not yet broken in with 1,000 miles. Leather seats could be softer but quality is good. Only dissatisfaction is with glove box which is rediculously designed and much too small. Good storage between seats helps. Previous 3 cars were Acura TLs which were great cars, but just as satisfied with STS.

Goodbye BMW, Hello Cadillac - 2005 Cadillac STS
By John Gordon - August 18 - 6:47 pmI own both a 2004 BMW M3 and a 2000 BMW M5. Due to poor reliability (the M5 spent more time in the shop than on the road) I decided to try an American car and bought a Cadillac STS. Although the handling is not as tight as the BMW. The ride and technology in the STS is superior. The STS holds its own in performance.

Great Car - 2005 Cadillac STS
By PeteB - August 12 - 10:20 pmThis STS is a great car! The STS drives so smoothly, with all the power and handling that you would expect in a luxury car. I have owned a lot of cars and this is one of the best. The STS has best balance between ride and handling over the competition. I agree with Edmunds.coms Editors best picks for 2005. I would never have probably looked at a Cadillac without the excellent reviews. I look for opportunities to drive this car! I think that the rear seat comfort could be improved though, but other than that I have no complaints so far! Also, received a great deal on a great car!

I Like My STS - 2006 Cadillac STS
By geoaquamariner - August 9 - 11:37 amI have owned this vehicle for 2 months and lovin it so far. The only complaints I have is the glove box is too small, and the coin tray drawer is hard to access being right in front of the gear shift. This car loves to run, and fast! I am still learning all the details of the navigation system. There is a lot it can do, but takes some practice and repetive use to get the handle on all its details. This is a solid car that gives a great driving experience. Cadillac got it right with this one.

Americas Back! Wow what a Cadillac! - 2006 Cadillac STS
By chink - August 9 - 11:21 amAmazing! Truly amazing! The line-up of the all new Cadillacs is outstanding, yet this one leads the pack. The all new STS seriously will send its competitors racing back to the drawing board. There are so many toys in this vehicle, youll never get bored. This puppy handles like a Corvette. Its feline-like qualities shine in this model. At 110 mph, this vehicle takes curves like a cat clawing grammas furniture in fear for its life! Exterior styling causes necks to snap as they attempt to determine what kind of vehicle your in. Owning this vehicle is certain to subject neighbors to envy. Out of my way this is no longer Gramps Cadillac! Finally a Caddy for us Gen Xers...not quite 30!

Excellent vehicle - 2006 Cadillac STS
By Gene Remillard - August 9 - 10:47 amHaving been a Lincoln owner since 1988, I am impressed with this, my first Cadillac. The initial reason for the change in vehicles was that I did not have the comfort I expected from the Town Car. The performance I am experiencing is above my expectations, and the comfort level is what I was looking for. Initially, the gas mileage was a bit lower than expected, but now with 1,600 miles, it has increased to the expected level.

Cadillac STS - 2006 Cadillac STS
By GARRY - July 31 - 10:37 pmAfter 3 Lexus models in a row, I decided on an STS. It was the best auto choice Ive made in years. Better dealership, better cost, and a far superior car. Much more fun to drive and far superior in design of features.
