This Year's Model Updates:

The high-performance X5 4.6is is discontinued. The 3.0i and 4.4i receive an exterior update, as well as a new all-wheel-drive system called xDrive. A six-speed manual transmission is now standard on the 3.0i, and a six-speed automatic is standard on the 4.4i. The 4.4i also receives a new 4.4-liter engine with Valvetronic and a fully variable intake system. Both models can add Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth hands-free cell phone capability as dealer-installed accessories.

Pros:
  • Rides and drives like a BMW sedan, multiple drivetrain choices, top safety scores, high-end cabin furnishings.
Cons:
  • Less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, poor fuel economy in the city.

  • Way better than the Toureg and RX330 - 2004 BMW X5

An amazing SUV. I drove the VW Touaeg V8 and Lexus RX330. The BMW feels like a BMW; not an SUV. When practicality meets pleasure, you have found The Ultimate Driving Machine.

Yes it is the best ride for the money and yes it looks even better than the previous model. The noise level is also reduced compared to the 2002 model. I got a 2002 X5 that was a pure nightmare, forcing me to visit 9 times to get all the problems fixed in less than a year. BMW North America was nice(?) enough to give me an replacement with additional charge and I had no choice but to get a 2004 model. Few weeks have past by after I got my new car. I have a squeaking steering wheel and a sun roof that wont securely shut.

The X-5 is clearly the best handling SUV, has all the BMW virtues (without the awful IDrive) and in 04 reasonable gas mileage. But the car is not as comfortable as a comparable sedan, and doesnt carry as much asthe new X-3! Consider the X5 a personal luxury vehicle that is stiffer and less comfortable than the comparable sedans but because its GVWR exceeds 6000 lbs, it will get you a helluva tax break if it is a business vehicle. If you are spending after tax dollars you should look elsewhere (e.g. the RX330 is much more comfortable and holds a LOT more stuff). Check with your accountant before buying!

This BMW X5 has been the best SUV that we have ever driven so far. Its the safest and heavy/stable enough to let us feel comfortable and have no worries whenever its bad weather.
