Overview & Reviews
The former base 2.8-liter engine gets bumped up to 3.0 liters, with an expected horsepower and torque increase to go along with the larger displacement. A new 2.5-liter engine premieres this year, as do rear seat head airbags and a slightly freshened exterior. BMW also improved some of the optional equipment, including Park Distance Control for both the front and rear of the vehicle, a bigger LCD screen for the navigation system, and an optional single-disc in-dash CD player.
- Thrilling to drive, luxurious ride quality, clean exterior styling.
- Confusing interior markings, demanding manual transmission, high-end models are pricey.

2001 540iA - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By timmcgarry - May 22 - 2:00 amThe 540iA automobile is one of the finer cars I have had the pleasure to drive. The handling and cornering is the best I have had experienced on an automobile. My sole complaint is centered on the stability of the automatic transmission. It slips. Several trips to the dealer have failed to resolve the problem permanently.

This is the ultimate driving machine? - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By bardi - May 21 - 2:00 amThis car drives well but suffers in the reliability category. Something seems to go wrong every month. Numerous attempts to fix the same problem seem to have failed. Build quality is poor relative to price. Of course, when the car isnt in the shop it does drive like a BMW should.

BMW 525 - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By navyman - May 15 - 2:00 amI have found the 525 to be a great value in the luxury car class. It does lack some performance, but as a daily driver it is hard to beat.

What a family truckster - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By danno - March 17 - 2:00 amTired of your SUV, rising gas prices... want german luxury, and yet flawless performance handling. This BMW wagon rules the mid size wagon roost... and for those of you with families, its top notch safety ratings can let you get a "sportscar" in a wagon.

Solid engine, solid tranny, solid car! - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By PTS - March 13 - 2:00 amPaid $32,000, 2 years old and 29,000mi. Drives like a dream, especially love the engine together with the Steptronic, so willing to take RPMs and shift. Adaptive feature great in mountains, better than normal auto tranny. Manual shifting is great for downhill control. Interior feels solid and luxurious. Wagon has some nice features with the bar that allows you to close off the trunk, put up a net to prevents pets from using leather seats, even when rear seats are down, the bar can be moved in front of the rear seat and still have preventive net, great engineering.

A Corvette for the family - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By booger - March 10 - 2:00 amIt is way better in the snow than most front wheel drives. It handles and rides like a luxury car but when challenged can perform like a sports car. The best car I ever owned.

Pure Bliss - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By genie2k1 - March 1 - 2:00 amThis car provides the most satisfying driving experience u can get from family car with four doors. Sufficiently fast, excellent build quality (except for a few minor glitches), superb handling and performance. This car is just great. Get a feeling of euphoria when driving it, so much that I find myself looking for excuses to drive it. Pure confidence. Engine has nice muted growl, gets ur adrenaline pumping. Acceleratoin is great, even with auto. Cant believe there is only 2.5 liters under there, feels more like 3.5. Styling is timeless. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE.
