Overview & Reviews
The former base 2.8-liter engine gets bumped up to 3.0 liters, with an expected horsepower and torque increase to go along with the larger displacement. A new 2.5-liter engine premieres this year, as do rear seat head airbags and a slightly freshened exterior. BMW also improved some of the optional equipment, including Park Distance Control for both the front and rear of the vehicle, a bigger LCD screen for the navigation system, and an optional single-disc in-dash CD player.
- Thrilling to drive, luxurious ride quality, clean exterior styling.
- Confusing interior markings, demanding manual transmission, high-end models are pricey.

My First BM Dub - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By TejMan - April 7 - 2:00 amAfter years of deliberation - I recently became the proud owner of a 2001 525i. First impressions, to put it simply, Im looking for excuses to drive this Vehicle... The exterior to this day still turns heads. (Noticing lots of brake dust on front wheels..)

Definitely the ultimate driving machine - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By RickBMW - March 2 - 2:00 amThis is the best car Ive ever owned. Everything about it reeks of quality and attention to detail. Gas mileage does suffer in city driving (16 mpg) but it gets a whopping 30 mpg on the highway and its smooth as glass.

BMW 525i - the best 5 series model - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By don500 - March 2 - 2:00 amValue is nothing short of exceptional when you consider the rating factors relative to the price. In fact, I doubt whether you can find a better car for the money. Superbly designed and built vehicle!

Best car Ive ever owned - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By Sean P - March 1 - 2:00 amThis is an exceptional car that combines true two-seater performance in a 4-door family sedans body. Like other reviewers, I smile every time I get in and head for an interstate.

540 6-speed - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By trainmandan - February 3 - 2:00 amFantastic vehicle. Two years after the fact it still brings a smile. Great acceleration, smooth ride, good looks.Replaced stock differential with Dinan 3.15, added other Dinan upgrades.Acceleration from 70 mph to 120 is amazing.Wish the car had a bit more rear leg room. Only minor maintenence problems with light bulbs, key losing initiation and aux. fan. OEM Dunlaps fair, replacement Bridgestone Pole Position SO4s poor, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s by far the best. Has held its value well, by far the best car Ive ever owned.

Uber Wagon - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By JAMindfw - January 21 - 2:00 amNot only the best wagon on the market, but the best car. The wagon actually gives you 50/50 weight distribution. Handles better than the sedan. The extra torque of the 540 is worth the investment. I have used it to haul and road trips, etc. Did a euro delivery too, so got to drive it on home turf. Seeing euro delivery is actually cheaper, one would be crazy not to buy that way. New wagons wont be available (E60) til 2005-06.

Excellent choice - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By too fast - December 9 - 2:00 amIf youre like me and had to give up the vette or some other two seater toy for the family....the 540 six, or M5 should certainly delete and sadness! This car is great, and if I didnt see the 4 doors it could easily pass for a true sports car. Ive disappointed a few cars including a CLK430, 99M3 (modified) and recently the new 350Z. Its the best all in one car I can think of at the moment that provides family time and performance driving!
