Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

  • BIG Disappointment - 2008 BMW 5-Series

Just got the 535 back after the recall- -engine malfunction--and got stuck on the side of the freeway. This is the third time, and its the second replacement of the high pressured fuel pump. So its the third fuel pump on this 5 series. I love the drive, but am concerned about the reliability factor since Ive been stuck on the side of the road three times--NOT FUN! If I get another BMW, maybe one without the turbo, since that seems to be the cause of the engine malfunction.

  • Rocket Ship Performance, Stellar Comfort - 2008 BMW 5-Series

Just bought this car to replace my 2003 BMW 745Li. Got it with a short shift manual transmission, sport package and aero kit. The car is stellar in performance and handling - a breath of fresh air from my trusty 745. This is my eleventh BMW and is just as reliable if not better than the others. Brings back memories of my 1990 535i 5 speed. The comfort seats are very supportive and provide enough bolstering to encourage spirited driving

I bought it cpo with 21,000 miles on it about a year ago I have the awesome extended warranty which was one of the final selling points for me. I have had a few small issues and BMW has fixed them on the spot no questions asked. The best thing about this car is driving it if you want a sports car but want four doors and some room this is your car . Handling is exceptional. It is so much fun to drive plus 32 mpg highway. The quality on the interior is good. I am 6,1 and a decent size guy I still have a little room left over. Cup holders awful everyone says it but hey its really the only thing bad I can say about it. I like the idrive. Radio is not bad. Buy one with the warranty you will luv it!

  • By far the Best Sedan Ive ever owned - 2000 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Im a 60 year-old high performance car guy. Ive had Hot Rods, sports cars, Mercedes (500SL), BMWs & Porsches (including a wicked 914 w/a 400 HP 350 Chevy V8), you get the picture. Our 2000 528i is the most reliable & fun to drive sedan Ive ever owned. Im 64" & 220 lbs & this is so much more comfortable than any of our past Mercedes or BMWs. Excellent handling quick & nimble great gas mileage ideal for long trips. Never get tired of driving it. Huge trunk & way more practical than a cumbersome 7 series. My wife, kids & grandkids are tall & theres plenty of room in back for 3 passengers. This is a fantastic car. In a 100K miles Ive only replaced tires, brakes & an alternator!

  • No homelink garage door opener in $50k car - 2011 BMW 5-Series

I bought 2011 BMW 528i last week, it runs great, looks great, I liked it until today. I thought, lets program the homelink garage door opener in my 50k car, only to find out that it is not included. Any other surprises, BMW?

This is my 3rd BMW so far, the new 5 series is spacious, comfortable and a joy to drive. The 8-speed automatic transmission (with the sports option on the steering wheel) is a joy to use and provides a very smooth ride. I drive the car in Lebanon on twisted mountain roads. The car is very well balanced. Handles turns and corners with precision.

  • A Fond Farewell - 1999 BMW 5-Series

Purchased CPO in 2001. Only had a few problems in my 9.5 years. Performance and build quality is unbeatable. Just sold the car as maintenance is getting expensive on a 12 year old BMW. My all in cost to drive the car (including repairs but excluding routine maintenance) was less than $3,600 per year. With a set of snow tires this car did great in the snow. Car was expensive upfront but more than worth it over time. I miss this car already. I only wish the new 535 wagon wasnt plagued with problems or I would not hesitate to buy another.

  • BMW, Mercedes, and Audi owner - 2011 BMW 5-Series

This is my 3d BMW. I have also owned an Audi, a Porsche, 3 Mercedes, and 4 Cadillacs plus numerous other cars. Only the Audi in the 70s, a Chevrolet in the 70s, and a Buick in the 80s were as unreliable. Although this is an attractive car, it is very troublesome. Already a recall for the fuel sensor. The car has had hesitation issues, the "Check Engine" light" has been on twice, the "Engine Malfunction" warning light has come on and the car actually quit. Now the passenger auto climate control must be set 10 degrees higher than the drivers to get an equivalent air flow. It is scheduled for the 4th service visit. The car has 3000 miles on it. Last BMW for me.
