Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

1997 BMW 540I 6speed The car is fun to drive when it works. In 44000 miles the car has been flat bedded back to the dealership three times. The car has been back to the dealership five times in the last nine months for repairs to the cooling system. The car is leaking oil from the engine. BMW tells me there is nothing wrong with the car. The bottom line is they just dont care. This is definitely my last BMW.

I have been considering a 5-series equivalent for 3 years, and the 535i is the most amazing car. The car is luxurious, yet when you drive it, it is like a sports car. The twin turbo accelerates so fast, that it pushes you backwards into the seat. It is so solid compard to my 330ci, and yet is accelerates faster. Cornering is not as nimble as my 3 series, but its a bigger car. I dont know why people complain about iDrive; its great. Anybody with any intelligence and who can use microsoft windows can use iDrive. It takes about 15 minutes to figure out, and it basically is a computer in your car without all the clutter. I have a 6spd manual, and I love it. It is smooth and sure. Amazing.

  • Turning 40..Great Birthday Present - 2006 BMW 5-Series

My last car was a Honda (great) but for my 40th birthday, I wanted a special present. I could not be any happier with my decision to take the plunge into a luxury vehicle. The drive is smooth and handles the road (city and highway) better than any car I have had. BMW is much heavier than the Honda which took getting use to. However, I cant see myself owning another car. I am hooked on BMW.

Driving in a BMW 528iT is like driving in a vault. The sportswagon is truely sports and drives like a sports car. Words simply do not do it justice. You are in complete control and should you decide to put some distant between yourself and others on the highway, you can with a blink of an eye literally jump from 65mph to 105. Simply put, the 528iT is exciting, exhilerating to drive, practicle, beautiful to look at and solid, I mean SOLID. Buy one and enjoy it.

Buy the extended warranty while still under manufacturers warranty and go long. Lots of $400 repairs with bigger ones to come

  • Still my favorite - 1998 BMW 5-Series

Over 4 years now, and I still love to get in this car. Its my second 540ia, the last being a 1995 540ia also. We live on the west coast, travel the mountain highways across the rockies, so that we get to use the V8 on the winding twisting passes. In summary, the car is understated, fits nicely in both the country and the city, whereas I think the Mercedes E-quivalent is overstated and somewhat pretentious for what it does for similar money ...

This is simply a great car. Good balance of performance and luxury. Not as peppy as my previous BMW, 95 M3, but far more comfortable and convenient. Great handling characteristics for a "larger" car with so much comfort. Astonishing gas mileage -- pushing 30 on the highway at unmentionable speeds.

Excellent workmanship, reliable and cruises at the upper limits of the speedo in a smooth pusuit of the highway. 8-19 hour drives are a treasure. No tiredness and you feel like the trip should have been longer. Cupholders are non-functional but who cares!!!!!
